Ella could feel the entire class staring at her. Some girls looked jealous, while others whispered in confusion. Why would someone like Jayden Cole sit beside someone like her? Even Ella herself didn’t understand it.
She nervously shifted in her seat, trying not to look at him. But the closer he sat, the more aware she became of everything — the faint smell of his cologne, the scratch marks on his knuckles, and the silence surrounding him. Jayden leaned back lazily in his chair, completely unbothered by the attention he attracted.
The lesson continued, but Ella couldn’t focus anymore.
Then suddenly, a folded piece of paper landed softly on her notebook.
Her eyes widened.
Slowly, she opened it.
“Why do you always look so scared?”
Ella’s breath caught in her throat. She quickly glanced at Jayden, but he was staring out the window as if nothing had happened.
Her fingers trembled as she wrote back carefully.
“Because people like you are dangerous.”
A small smirk appeared on his lips after reading her reply.
For a moment, Ella expected him to laugh or make fun of her like everyone else did. Instead, he leaned closer and whispered softly,
“Maybe you shouldn’t believe everything people say about me.”
And somehow, those words frightened her even more.
