Ella spent the rest of the lesson trying to ignore the strange feeling growing inside her chest. Jayden’s words replayed in her mind over and over again. Maybe you shouldn’t believe everything people say about me.
But how could she not? Everyone in school knew who Jayden Cole was. Teachers avoided him. Students feared him. Girls chased after him only to end up crying days later. He was trouble — the exact kind of person Ella had always stayed away from.
The bell finally rang, breaking the silence inside the classroom. Students quickly gathered their bags and rushed outside, laughing loudly in the hallway. Ella carefully packed her books, hoping to leave unnoticed like always.
But before she could stand, a group of girls suddenly blocked her desk.
“Well, look who caught Jayden’s attention,” one of them mocked with a fake smile.
Ella lowered her gaze immediately. “I-I didn’t do anything.”
“Sure you didn’t,” another girl scoffed. “Girls like you are always pretending to be innocent.”
Their laughter burned through Ella’s chest. She gripped her bag tightly, wishing the ground would swallow her whole.
Then suddenly, the laughter stopped.
A shadow appeared behind them.
Jayden.
His expression darkened as he looked at the girls. “Move.”
Just one word — cold and sharp.
And immediately, they stepped aside.
