The hallway became completely silent as the girls hurried away without another word. Ella stood frozen beside her desk, still clutching her bag tightly against her chest. She didn’t understand why Jayden had defended her. Nobody had ever done that before.
Jayden glanced at her briefly before picking up his jacket from the chair.
“You should stop letting people walk over you,” he said casually.
Ella frowned slightly. “It’s not that easy.”
He looked at her for a moment, his sharp eyes softer than usual. “Maybe you just don’t know your worth yet.”
Her heart skipped unexpectedly.
Before she could reply, Jayden turned and walked out of the classroom, leaving Ella standing there in confusion. She told herself not to think too much about it. Boys like Jayden didn’t suddenly become kind. There had to be a reason behind everything.
Later that evening, the sky darkened with heavy clouds as Ella left school alone. The streets were unusually quiet, and she pulled her sweater closer against the cold wind.
Halfway home, she noticed footsteps behind her.
At first, she ignored them.
But the footsteps became faster.
Ella’s breathing quickened as fear crept into her chest. She turned slightly, only to see three boys from school following her with dangerous smiles on their faces.
“Well,” one of them called out mockingly, “looks like the innocent girl is all alone tonight.”
