Ella’s heart pounded violently against her chest as the boys moved closer. The empty street suddenly felt smaller, colder, and far more dangerous than before. She tightened her grip on her bag and forced herself to keep walking, hoping they would eventually leave her alone.
But they didn’t.
One of the boys stepped in front of her, blocking her path completely. “Why are you running?” he asked with a cruel grin. “We just want to talk.”
Ella swallowed hard. “Please… move.”
The boys laughed softly, enjoying the fear in her voice.
Another one leaned closer. “You think sitting beside Jayden makes you special now?”
Tears burned behind Ella’s eyes, but she refused to let them fall. She tried to step around them, but a hand suddenly grabbed her wrist tightly.
“Let go of me!” she cried, struggling against his grip.
Then suddenly—
A fist slammed into the boy’s face.
Everything happened so fast.
The boy stumbled backward with a curse while the others froze in shock. Ella stared wide-eyed at the figure standing in front of her.
Jayden.
His jaw was clenched, and his knuckles were already bleeding. The darkness in his eyes this time was terrifying.
“I warned people not to touch what’s mine,” he said coldly.
Ella’s breath caught instantly.
What’s mine?
And for the first time, she realized Jayden Cole might be far more dangerous than she ever imagined.
