The boys quickly backed away after seeing the look in Jayden’s eyes. None of them dared to speak again. One of them muttered an apology before they disappeared down the street, leaving Ella trembling in shock.
The cold wind blew softly between them, but neither of them moved.
Ella slowly pulled her wrist against her chest, still trying to process what had just happened. “W-Why would you say that?” she whispered nervously. “I’m not… yours.”
Jayden looked away for a second, breathing heavily as if he regretted the words himself.
“I didn’t mean it like that,” he muttered.
“But you said it.”
Silence fell again.
For the first time since meeting him, Ella noticed something different beneath his tough expression. He looked tired. Hurt. Like someone carrying pain he could never explain.
Jayden sighed quietly before removing his black hoodie and placing it over Ella’s shoulders. “You’re shaking.”
The warmth of the hoodie instantly surrounded her, carrying the faint scent of rain and his cologne. Ella looked up at him, confused by how gentle he suddenly seemed.
“Why are you being nice to me?” she asked softly.
Jayden stared at her for a long moment before answering.
“Because you remind me of someone I failed to protect once.”
Ella’s eyes widened.
But before she could ask what he meant, Jayden suddenly froze, his expression darkening as he stared at something behind her.
