Chapter 6: It’s a New Year Jamison and his dad were due back on New Year’s Eve. I knew he’d call me as soon as they got home. I’d planned on going over there as soon as he called. This made me happy all week. Plus I was spending time with Carla, and she was very quick witted. She always got my jokes and made me feel bright and intelligent. When I told her what my stepdad had said she laughed so hard she fell off the couch. When I gave her the feathered purse, she cried. She had thought the other one had been lost or stolen, but when I told her who had it, she didn’t know what to think. “It doesn’t matter, this one’s nicer anyhow,” I soothed her. “And I’m so grateful to you, besides that fun smooching session, for shoveling the sidewalk.
