A Fate Decided

A shiver ran down my spine as reality sunk in. I was actually living this life, one where maids catered to my every whim and strangers bowed with a respectful 'My lady'. It still felt surreal, like a bad dream that my family was gone, and I had somehow landed in a demon world where humans are the oddity. "Is there anything you would love me to add, my lady?" The maid asked, interrupting my thoughts. She has been applying makeup to my face. The makeup felt cool and smooth on my skin, a stark contrast to the turmoil brewing inside me. She skillfully crafted my hair into an elegant, intricate braid, adorned with delicate silver threads that sparkled like stars. She made me wear a long red dress that had golden designs on it. The dress hugged my curves and the silk whispered against my skin as I moved. Emily's skilled hands wrought magic, transforming me into a stranger in the mirror's reflection. I couldn't need anything more. It was really beautiful. "No! I don't think I have anything in mind because this is so beautiful. Did you learn make-up art?" I asked, but she kept looking at me. "Never mind, what is your name?" "I'm Emily, my lady, and I was assigned to be your personal maid. If there is anything you want, I would be glad to be of service to you." She bowed with a smile. "Then can you please tell me about this Demon World? It's not time yet for dinner, so you can tell me about it while we wait for a messenger to inform me," I asked. She nodded. "Grab a seat," she sat down opposite me. "Demons are apex predators in this world, shrouded in mystery and feared by many." "Emily's eyes sparkled with excitement as she chatted about the Demon realm." "Our kind is rare, with only a handful of clans scattered across the realms, each wielding unique and terrifying powers. There are other creatures, like the werewolves and the vampires, but only Demons are in this realm. We have diverse powers, but the most powerful is the Demon king. He has all the powers you can think of, and again, demons are in serious conflict with the werewolves. We don't mingle with them," she explained. When I was little, I watched many movies with these kinds of creatures. I never knew they existed in real life. Hearing her explain it, it was like she was telling me a fantasy story. "But I am human, why did the Demon king bring me here?" I asked her. "I have no idea, but before you came, he told us to take very good care of you, because you are his cousin. I do not know your relationship, my lady," she answered. I remember he explained it to me earlier, he said he was my father's friend. "Thank you for answering my questions," I smiled. A knock came at the door, and with Emily's help, I walked to the dining room, where the others were. "The Demon King, Drake, and his family were already seated in the grand dining hall, their piercing gazes meeting mine as I entered. The air thickened with unspoken expectations." "You look so beautiful, Oceanah," Drake complimented. I smiled and sat next to Travis. There were two other young men sitting opposite us, and an elderly woman. "Nice to meet you, Oceanah, you are so beautiful. I never knew there was a human who looked like a goddess," One of the guys complimented. "I am Dalton, the Demon king's first son," he introduced. "I am Ethan, the second son. Dalton is my biological brother, and this young woman here is our Mom," he introduced. Our Mom? He was only referring to him and Dalton. What about Travis? I looked at him, and after a while he looked at me. "Don't tell me that you are expecting me to introduce myself too," he said and I nodded. "Why would I? You already know my name, so what else is necessary for you to know?" So rude. "Travis! Learn to behave yourself, don't be hostile," the Demon King warned. "This is Mikayla, the mother of Dalton and Ethan, and also Travis's stepmom. Travis's mom died prematurely," he added. His mom died? I asked in a surprised yet polite manner. "Don't pity me!" Travis warned before I could even say something to him. "I hate it." "Don't mind Travis, this is how he is. If you have any confusion, you can come to me. I would gladly clear it up for you," Dalton proposed. "Travis is an arrogant person, and it's a shame his mother had to die early. Maybe it would've taught him some humility," he added. Is he using the dead to joke? Did he just insult his stepbrother because he had lost his mother untimely? A spark of indignation flared within me as the thought of my dead parents crossed my mind and my hands instinctively balled into fists as I met Travis's unreadable gaze. I could feel the anger brewing inside him as the rhythm of his breathing became tensed, and his eyes darkened. "Ethan nodded in agreement, and she had to drop the bombshell that his father was the Demon king. No wonder Travis jumped at the chance to claim kinship. I don't understand why my father took him in without even knowing if Travis was his son or not," Ethan said. "Enough!" the Demon king yelled. "Is that a joke? Because to me, it doesn't feel like one, using the dead as a joke. Do you truly believe death is a fitting penalty for a child you've brought into this world? Do you even know the pain of losing a loved one? I guess you haven't felt it before, and that is why you have the audacity to talk this way. I may be a lowly outsider in this grand scheme, but I've got enough heart to recognize disrespect when I see it and what you said was way out of line," I cautioned. "I have warned you both not to say that again. I don't mind punishing you severely for this abnormal display of character and spoken words! Travis is my son, and I am sure of it. If he wasn't, why would he gain all my powers over you two?" the Demon King asked. "I called you all here for an important announcement and not this." "I'm sorry 'My Lord'. I apologize on their behalf. You can go ahead and relay your message. I will deal with both of them later. But you cannot kill your sons just because a girl countered what they said," his wife, Mikayla, said. The Demon king clears his throat. "As the next Demon king, you have come of age to take over, so I am making my decision here and now. To take over the demon realm, Travis, you would get married to Oceanah in three days!"
