The room was quieter than the rest of the castle.
Not in the comforting way silence existed in empty spaces, but in a controlled way, as though even sound here had been taught restraint.
I noticed it the moment I stepped inside.
The chamber was long and narrow, shaped more like a council hall than a classroom. Stone walls stretched around me, interrupted only by tall, narrow windows. A single long table occupied the center of the room. There were no decorations meant for comfort. Only function. Only order.
Eric hadn’t been allowed to follow me in.
That alone made me more aware of my surroundings.
I carefully took a seat, unsure whether I had chosen the right place. No one guided me. No one corrected me immediately.
The uncertainty felt intentional.
A few others were already seated.
Guards. A couple of younger nobles. A woman in dark green robes who didn’t look directly at anyone. And at the far end of the table stood the steward, his hands folded behind his back.
He waited until everyone settled before speaking.
“This is not a council,” he said calmly. “And it is not a discussion.”
I lifted my gaze slightly.
“It is instruction,” he continued. “You will learn how to exist within this castle without causing disruption.”
The words weren’t harsh.
But they were final.
He turned slightly, pacing just enough to command attention without wasting movement.
“You will learn ranks, addresses, and restrictions. You will learn what is permitted to you—and what is not.”
Something shifted faintly inside my chest.
Not fear.
Awareness.
“You will not speak to the Alpha unless spoken to,” the steward continued. “You will not enter restricted wings. You will not interrupt training or council matters. And you will not assume familiarity with those above your standing.”
Above your standing.
I repeated the phrase silently.
I wasn’t even sure what my standing was.
The steward’s gaze moved across the room, measured and deliberate.
“You are not here to be evaluated as individuals,” he added. “You are here to be understood as a function.”
That sentence settled uncomfortably in my mind.Function.Not a person. Not a guest.
Function.
I shifted slightly in my seat. I was suddenly more aware of how still everyone else remained. No one fidgeted. No one reacted outwardly. Even breathing seemed carefully controlled.
Eric’s absence felt louder in his silence.
The steward paused briefly, then continued.
“Rank is not given here for comfort. It is maintained for stability.”
A soft sound came from the far side of the table.
Not loud enough to interrupt.Just enough to be noticed. I turned my gaze slightly.
Kira.
She was already seated, posture perfect, expression calm. She had not raised her voice. Had not spoken. Had not needed to. Yet somehow, the room felt slightly different because she was there.
I had noticed her immediately—but Kira had not noticed me. At least, not directly.
Kira adjusted her sleeve slightly, then spoke to the steward without looking at him fully.
“The eastern patrol routes were adjusted last night,” she said evenly.
The steward paused.
“Approved,” he replied. That was all.No discussion. No explanation.Just acceptance.
Kira nodded once, then returned to silence as if she had never spoken.
I watched that exchange longer than I intended to.
Not because it was dramatic.Because it wasn’t.It was normal here. Eric would have made a joke about it, I thought suddenly. Something light to break the tension. But there was no lightness here. Only structure.
The steward resumed.
“There are those who act within rules,” he said. “And those who exist as part of them. Your goal is not distinction. It is placement.”
My fingers tightened slightly against the edge of the table.
Placement.
That word followed me more than the rest.
The session continued for what felt like a long time, though nothing truly changed. Instructions layered over instructions. Names of ranks were listed. Protocols were repeated. Expectations were clarified without ever becoming personal.
I began to realize something uncomfortable. No one here was learning for the first time.
Except me.
Every time the steward paused, I noticed how few people actually needed the information. A few nodded absentmindedly. One guard barely reacted at all. Kira remained composed, almost uninterested.
I was the only one absorbing everything as it mattered. Because it did.For me.
Eventually, the steward stopped speaking.
“That is sufficient for today,” he said. “You are dismissed.”
The chairs shifted quietly. No one rushed. No one hesitated.
They simply moved as if they had always known where to go next.
I stood a moment later than the others. Not because I was unsure.Because I was still processing.
As I turned to leave, I felt it.
Not a voice. Not a sound. A presence shifted in the room. I looked up.
Kira was watching me. Not openly. Not directly confronting.
Just enough to confirm I had finally been noticed.
Our eyes met for a brief moment.
Kira’s expression did not change.
It wasn’t curiosity.
It wasn’t hostility.
It was something quieter.
Then, just as quickly, Kira looked away and stood, moving past me without acknowledgment.
As if she had already decided something about me. And I hadn’t been informed what that decision was.
Outside the chamber, the air felt different again.
Eric was waiting in the corridor, leaning lightly against the wall as if he had been there the entire time without moving.
“That looked long,” he said when he saw me.
I exhaled softly. “It was.”
He tilted his head. “You okay?”
I hesitated. Then nodded. I think so.”
Eric smiled slightly, though it didn’t fully reach his eyes this time. “That’s usually how it starts.”
I glanced at him.“What does that mean?”
He shrugged. “Nothing important.”
But he didn’t explain further.
Instead, he pushed off the wall and started walking beside me.
“Come on. You’re done for the day.”
As we walked, I looked ahead through the long corridor.
The castle felt the same as always. Cold. Controlled. Certain.
But something inside her had shifted slightly. Not enough for anyone else to notice.Enough for her to notice.
I was no longer just being brought into the castle. I was being positioned inside it.
And I still didn’t know what for……
Just yet……………
