Chapter One

Chapter One Friday, 12th Joe arrived home late in the evening, as usual. Caroline fixed him a light supper. She had eaten already. After the meal, as she made coffee and Joe stacked the dishwasher, she asked about his plans for the weekend. Saturdays were reserved for golf of course. Caroline couldn’t recall when this particular tradition had been born, but that’s what it was now, a tradition. Cast in stone. Every Saturday Joe jumped out of bed with a level of enthusiasm rarely seen during the week and was off at first light, come rain or shine. In the early days of their marriage it had made her feel strangely grown up. Her husband out playing golf in a regular foursome while she stayed at home doing wifely things. Now it made her feel ignored. “Well I’ve got the regular game with the chaps first thing tomorrow morning and then a lunchtime tee-off with Tim. He’s one of the new committee members and wants to play nine holes with all the people who take part in competitions regularly so he can help with selection.” As Joe warmed to his theme Caroline realised if she didn’t explain the reason behind her question he would deep-dive into the world of handicaps, backswings and green conditions, and be lost forever. She interrupted his flow. “Oh that’s good. You’ll be home by three then?” Joe glanced up from the dishes. “Yes. Why? Are going out somewhere?” Caroline leaned over and kissed him, slow and gentle on the lips, feeling his mouth frame into a smile as she did so. “No, actually we’re staying in.” She smiled back and twirled out of the kitchen.
