Episode 7:Cracks in the Foundation

305 Words
Ethan’s alarm buzzed incessantly, jolting him from a restless sleep. He glanced at the clock—7:45 a.m. His engineering lecture had started fifteen minutes ago. Groaning, he sat up and rubbed his eyes. It wasn’t the first time he’d overslept in recent weeks. Late nights with Sophia, wandering the campus and talking about dreams, had replaced his once disciplined schedule. Kevin gave him a pointed look as he gathered his books. “That’s the third lecture you’ve missed this week, bro. You good?” “I’ll catch up,” Ethan mumbled, waving him off. But as Kevin left, guilt settled like a stone in his chest. Ethan knew the signs. His grades were slipping, his professors were starting to notice his absences, and even his parents’ regular phone calls felt heavier with expectation. That afternoon, as he sat with Sophia under their favorite jacaranda tree, he couldn’t hide the worry etched on his face. “You’re quiet today,” Sophia said, nudging him playfully. Ethan sighed. “I missed another lecture. My assignments are piling up. I don’t know if I’m doing this right anymore.” Sophia tilted her head, studying him. “You’re doing fine, Ethan. You just need to find balance. Don’t let the pressure eat you alive.” But her words, though comforting, felt hollow. Balance seemed impossible when he was being pulled in two directions—toward the carefree world Sophia offered and the heavy burden of his family’s sacrifices. That evening, Ethan sat alone in the library, staring at a blank notebook page. The quiet hum of fluorescent lights was a stark contrast to Sophia’s vibrant energy. For the first time, he felt the full weight of his choices pressing down on him. Could he truly have both freedom and responsibility, or was one destined to overshadow the other?
