Episode 8: A wake up Call

312 Words
Ethan’s phone vibrated on his desk, pulling him from the endless scroll of social media. It was a message from his mother: “We’re so proud of you, son. Keep working hard and remember why you’re there.” The words hit him like a thunderclap. He stared at the screen, guilt pooling in his chest. The sacrifices his parents had made to send him to university weren’t something he could take lightly. That afternoon, Ethan skipped his usual lunch with Sophia. Instead, he headed to the engineering lab to work on a project he had almost forgotten about. The room was quiet, save for the hum of computers and the occasional murmur of students deep in concentration. “Ethan?” a familiar voice called. He turned to see Fred, one of Sophia’s friends, standing at the doorway. “Didn’t expect to see you here,” Fred said, raising an eyebrow. “Sophia said you were meeting her.” “I needed to catch up on some work,” Ethan replied, not meeting Fred’s gaze. Fred hesitated before stepping closer. “You know, it’s okay to have fun, but don’t lose sight of why you’re here. Trust me, I’ve seen too many people derail themselves.” Ethan nodded, appreciating the advice more than he expected. Later that evening, Sophia found him in the library, hunched over his notes. “Avoiding me?” she asked, her tone light but her eyes searching. “I just needed to focus,” Ethan admitted. Sophia sat across from him, her usual playfulness replaced by a quiet seriousness. “You don’t have to choose between fun and responsibility, Ethan. You just need to find your rhythm.” But as she left him to his work, Ethan couldn’t shake the feeling that his rhythm had already been lost—and finding it again would take more than just words.
