Over the next few weeks, Ethan’s life transformed. He spent more time with Sophia and her friends, their laughter and carefree attitudes filling the gaps in his once rigid schedule. Lunches turned into long conversations, evenings into campus strolls, and late nights into casual meetups.
Ethan’s roommate, Kevin, noticed the change. “You’re spending a lot of time with that artsy girl,” he teased one evening as Ethan returned to their room.
“Her name is Sophia,” Ethan replied, trying to sound indifferent, though a small smile betrayed him.
“Don’t get too lost, bro. Campus has a way of pulling you in all directions,” Kevin warned, tossing a textbook onto his bed.
Ethan shrugged. “I’ve got it under control.”
But deep down, he wasn’t so sure. His study sessions were growing shorter, replaced by spontaneous outings and Sophia’s irresistible charm. She brought color to his structured world, and he couldn’t get enough of it.
One afternoon, they sat under a jacaranda tree near the library, the purple blossoms falling softly around them. Sophia leaned back on her elbows, her face tilted toward the sun.
“Don’t you ever just want to live in the moment?” she asked, her voice dreamy.
Ethan hesitated. “I don’t think I’ve ever had that luxury. There’s too much at stake.”
Sophia turned to him, her eyes piercing. “Life isn’t just about stakes, Ethan. Sometimes you have to let go.”
Her words lingered in his mind as he returned to his dorm that night. Was he too focused on the future to enjoy the present? Or was he beginning to lose himself in a dream that wasn’t entirely his?
The questions gnawed at him, but the pull of Sophia’s world was stronger than his resolve.
