Chapter Twenty-nine BarefootThe riders returned home after dark. Successive showers and the whir of the washing machine tripled the family’s daily water consumption in the space of an hour. As Logan came in the front door, Leslie slipped through the back. “Wiri fell off.” Phoenix rested her chin against Hana’s arm and whispered the words. She glanced at the kitchen door, careful to prevent him from overhearing. “Leslie said.” Hana stirred spaghetti and leaned sideways to kiss her daughter’s temple. “What happened?” “A steer cut sideways and he couldn’t stay in the saddle. He landed hard and his horse bolted.” Her brows creased into a frown and tears sparkled in the corners of her grey eyes. “Papa snatched him from the ground just as the herd reached him. They would have trampled him.”
