Chapter Thirty-four WispThey walked up the steps and onto the deck together. A waitress appeared from an open door, carrying plastic chairs under both arms. She smiled at Hana, but frowned at Melissa. Hana sensed her stop and turn to watch them as they went inside the building and out of the glaring sun. “Tea, coffee, or something stronger?” Melissa clapped her hands together and smiled down at Hana. She’d made up her face with enough enthusiasm to suggest she wished to bury herself beneath a solid layer. A livid scarlet lipstick added the finishing touch to the flawless effect. Hana imagined the difficulties Melissa faced each day and determined not to do anything to make it worse for her. She chose coffee, paid the bill, and selected a corner table away from the primary thoroughfare.
