Once at the house, Hana didn’t begin the usual homework routine, allowing the children to slob in the lounge and watch a Disney movie while eating snacks. Sympathy and an ice pack satisfied Phoenix. She sat at the kitchen table and examined the blue bruise on her left arm. “Leave the ice on it,” Hana ordered. “Stop taking if off to admire the bruise.” She stopped in the process of gathering snacks into a bowl for each child and narrowed her eyes. “How did you hurt your arm, anyway? That truck has more safety features than anything else available.” Phoenix studied the ice pack with increased interest, her body stiffening as Hana waited. “Okay, so I might have sat sideways with my legs on the seat,” she admitted. Hana groaned. “Please tell me you still wore your belt?” “Yes, I promise.”
