CHAPTER 3

I quickly went to open the door and, unsurprisingly, it was the police. “We will need you to step aside, Ma’am,” the cop said. I was surprised by the harsh tone with which the cop spoke to me. “I came in and found him dead” “I don’t know who could have done this.” “He has injuries that show that he was stabbed. My husband didn’t have any enemies. He was a peaceful man,” I said hurriedly. “We understand Ma’am,” the cop said assuredly. “However, we will need you to come with us for questioning” “You seem to be a prime suspect in this matter”. My eyes opened wide as I couldn’t believe what was said to me. “A suspect?” “What do you mean by that? Are you trying to say that I hurt my husband?” “What even are you cops on nowadays,” I said loudly as I was quite upset. Before I could catch a breath, my hands were handcuffed and I was escorted outside to their vehicle, which was packed opposite the van. “Can someone please tell me what is going on?” “Am I being arrested for my husband’s death?” “I find it hard to believe that the love of my life is dead and the next thing you do is to put me in cuffs,” I said with a lot of pain. As we drove to the police station, I kept crying but it didn’t seem like the cops were bothered. “Mama,” I said on the phone after giving a lot of thought to calling my mother. “How are you, my daughter?” She responded. She sounded very happy and I didn’t want to spoil her mood. I couldn’t tell her what had happened to me. “I only wanted to hear your voice and know that you are fine,” I said, trying to be calm. “Porunn, are you sure?” “I know that voice. Is something wrong?” She asked. “There is nothing mama,” I only wanted to hear your voice. I could hear her chewing food and it was most likely to be a plate of salad. It was her best meal. “Take care of yourself, baby,” she said. I couldn’t bring myself to understand what was happening to me as we drove to the station. “What is happening, Sir?” “Are you arresting me?” I couldn’t stop asking these questions. But the police didn’t give any response. We just drove by. “You will have more idea of what is happening when we get to the station, but in the meantime, we will need your phone until investigations are completed,” the cop who was driving said. “My phone?!” I exclaimed. “This seems to me like something more than an arrest.” “At this point, I don’t even know if I am being kidn*pped,” I continued. “Your phone, Ma,” the cop repeated. This time, it sounds much more commanding. I gave him one of my phones while I hid the other in my bag. I hoped that it wouldn’t ring out so that the cops wouldn’t find out that I had hidden it. I was being watched so I could not switch off my phone. We continued and just as we were only a few streets away from the police station, I was met with another delicate situation. Well, not just me this time around. A Toyota Tundra vehicle was coming at full speed from the adjacent street and hit the patrol car we were in. The cop driver managed to make a quick swerve that averted a straight-on collision but the Toyota vehicle hit the car, nevertheless causing an accident. The patrol car took a big hit that pushed it towards a ditch. I moved my legs to make sure I could feel them. I felt dizzy for a few seconds, but when I noticed that I could open my eyes and move my legs, I knew that I was fine. I only suffered minor injuries to my arm and there was blood on my belly. Thankfully, it wasn’t severe and it didn’t seem like I had a deep cut. The cop who was sitting at the front right-hand side suffered the most injuries, presumably because he took the hit directly. He was in a dicey and delicate situation. I saw him being moved into the ambulance on a stretcher. He had blood all over him and I wasn't sure if he was alive or not. The other three officers in the cop vehicle also suffered injuries but it seemed as if I had the least delicate situation. The Toyota Tundra vehicle immediately drove away as soon as it hit us. I had a very brief sight of the person in the vehicle but I was only sure about seeing a man in dark glasses and a face cap. It didn't seem like someone I knew. “This could have been intentional,” I said to myself. “What purpose would someone have to hit us?” These were questions that I didn't know the answers to and I was sure that it was best to forget about them. The main goal was how I could get out of the mess I found myself in. I couldn't even believe it yet that the love of my life was murdered. “Maybe it would have been better that I lost my life in the accident,” I thought to myself again. “How would life be without Mikkel?” I figured out a little plan. I thought that I had to escape the whole scene because I had a bad feeling about the situation. It felt as if I was being set up by my husband’s death. “This is more than just an arrest,” I thought. I knew I had to do something or my fate would be the same or similar. I was being cleaned up by the Emergency Medical Technicians and I tried to create a diversion. “It was time to run,” I said loudly to myself when the EMT was a few meters away and could not hear me. “I would run far away, enough of all these,” I continued as I looked towards the bushy area where I saw the best place to run into.
