There was no time to wonder who this impatient traveller might be. She decided to turn away from the sea as she was sure that she had spotted a hostelry on the edge of town and it was likely that an early coach would set off from there to London. The air seemed to be growing colder by the minute as she hurried on. A harsh night breeze blew up and then suddenly the Heavens opened and rain fell furiously. Within a short time she was soaked, but she drove herself on. She had to get away, away! As her mother had taught her, she started to pray, as she had never prayed before, that God would save her from the terrible Fate that must surely befall her. A Church bell tolled midnight.
