Kalix.
His glowing eyes met mine as he spotted us up the tree. His wolfEn grin lighting up his face beneath those ominous glowing eyes.
They'd found us.
He'd found me.
Draven pushed him back, barking an order at him before his eyes locked onto ours. "Come down before you hurt yourselves" he called in his deep timbre.
Kalix was pulled away by his father, and a few other large men I'd seen before, but didn't have names for.
I could feel my mother tense behind me, as if she was prepared to stay atop this branch for the duration of eternity. I've never met anyone with a stronger stubborn streak than her. Maybe myself. But I guess I got it honest.
Just then a particularly fierce wave of heat swarmed me. I moaned. The heads of a few men snapped to attention, focusing on me.
Draven growled loudly. Clearly speaking to the men in their mindlink... they drifted off into the dark, as if having to be pulled away from our tree against their will.
"Charlie. Come down before you fall. Your fever is too high. You're going to attract every unmated male within 10 miles." he huffed, exhaustion clear in his tone. "Your sister will be here in a moment. Come down to her, okay?"
I moaned again, my consciousness swimming with a heat that made my blood sizzle. My marrow felt like lava inside my bones.
Draven clearly wasn't as affected by my scent or the scandalous sounds I was making. As a newly mated wolf and the Alpha, he would be largely immune. But he also knew I was his brother's fated. I was bound to his brother, Kalix. This heat was calling specifically for him.
Forcing us to make a decision, I didn't think I was prepared for. Mark or Reject.
As much as I hated the idea of my choice being taken from me. I hated the idea of losing the option of Kalix forever, even more.
Kalix was handsome. Kind. Strong. I would be blessed to have been able to find someone like him on my own. But the thought of some distant plan knitting us together felt wrong to me. I wanted to be chosen. I wanted to choose.
My heat spiked again. My body began to spasm. I could hear my mothers voice, in the distance as if under water or in a long tunnel. I could make out her calming, soothing tone but not the words.
Then I felt them. Strong arms, a soothing, cooling balm to the sting beneath every inch of my skin. I moaned in pleasure. A low wanton sound that should have made me ashamed of myself but felt strangely freeing.
I nestled closer to the bare chest, trying to get more of that skin to rest against mine. The balm so intense, the smell so soothing. Pine needles and cedar with a hint of citrus.
Kalix.
As alarmed as I should be, I burrowed closer to him. Reveling in the deep purr vibrating beneath his skin. Running my fingers over his silken flesh, enjoying the sparks that originated in my fingertips.
His eyes were looking deeply into my face, as he pushed hair back from my sweaty, mudstreaked face. He was speaking to me, but I could only hear my own pulse throbbing through my ears with a loud ringing.
His touch was like water. Soothing an injury. I wanted more of it. I would never have enough of it.
Was this the mythical bond he'd told me about. The one he could feel the pull of so strongly? The one he'd been fighting for me, for almost 2 months.
Why would anyone fight this.
This felt like home. Life everything. Like completion.
Then it was ripped away from me.
I growled.
At my mother. My eyes went large at her startled face. At the tears standing in her eyes as she observed my elongated canines. She knew.
Draven gently pulled my mother away from me by her shoulders, pushing her into Serenity's waiting arms. The look of betrayal on her face will stay with me.
Strong arms wrapped around me from behind, that calming sensation returning immediately along with the scent of my mate.
"Mate" I sighed, leaning back into his steady embrace.
Serenity smirked, turning my mother away and walking back the way they'd come. Leaving me alone in the forest, with my mate.
Kalix.
Whether I liked it or not. My body had spoken.
