The Hidden Burden

850 Words
She thought about Draven her abusive fiance—who was already suspicious, maybe even close to discovering the truth on his own. If he did, the fallout could be catastrophic. She could lose her family’s trust, her position, her safety. The kingdom’s stability might even be threatened if her secret became known to others. And what about her own future? The child she carried was a part of her, a symbol of her love and her pain. If Damien rejected her, could she find the strength to carry on alone? Would she be able to face a life of loneliness, of hiding her own truth? Kelina’s heart clenched at the thought of Damien’s pain of hurting him even more. She feared that if he knew, he might hate her, or worse, blame himself for everything. Yet, she also feared that if she kept silent, the guilt would eat her alive, gnawing at her conscience forever. Every scenario played out in her mind—some hopeful, many disastrous. The potential consequences were like a storm clouds gathering on the horizon, dark and threatening. the longer she waited, the more difficult it would be to face the truth and its aftermath. Her tears dried as she made a silent vow—whatever happened, she would have to find a way to face the storm when it finally arrived. But right now, all she could do was brace herself for the inevitable. Kelina woke early, the faint light of dawn filtering through her chambers. She moved with a quiet determination, dressing in her finest but simplest attire—clothing that would suit the day’s upcoming challenges. Her mind was still heavy with the weight of her secret, but she pushed those thoughts aside, focusing on the present. She made her way downstairs to the grand dining hall, the familiar scent of breakfast filling the air. As she entered, her eyes immediately caught Sofia sitting at the table, engaged in conversation with a man she didn’t recognize. Sofia looked up and smiled warmly. Beside her sat a tall, confident man with piercing eyes—the man’s presence commanding yet calm. “This is my beloved,” Sofia said softly, her voice filled with pride. “His name is Beta Ethan. He is Prince Damien’s Beta.” Kelina’s eyes widened slightly in surprise, but she composed herself quickly and offered a genuine smile. She inclined her head politely and extended her hand. “Congratulations,” she said warmly. “It’s good to meet you, Beta Ethan.” Ethan looked at her with a gentle, understanding smile, and she felt a flicker of warmth amid her tumult of thoughts. Kelina barely touched her breakfast, her appetite dulled by the storm of thoughts swirling inside her. She pushed her chair back gently, her movements subdued and distant. With a polite excuse, she rose from the table and quietly left the dining hall, slipping out into the fresh morning air. She made her way to the courtyard, finding her way to the old, sturdy swing that hung from a nearby oak tree. Sitting down carefully, she let herself sway gently, the rhythmic creak of the chains soothing in the stillness. For a moment, she closed her eyes and simply enjoyed the quiet. The gentle breeze brushed her face, carrying away some of the heaviness in her heart. The world around her was calm, but inside, her mind was anything but. Still, in this peaceful space, she allowed herself a brief escape—a fleeting moment of serenity before the storm of her secrets and decisions resumed. Kelina gently swayed on the swing, her eyes fixed on the distant horizon, but her mind was miles away. The quiet of the morning wrapped around her like a fragile shield, offering a brief respite from the chaos inside her. Yet, even in this peaceful moment, her thoughts refused to rest. What am I doing? she wondered bitterly. Every breath I take feels heavier than the last. She thought about Damien—her love for him, so deep and true, now tangled with guilt and fear. Would he ever forgive her? Could she find a way to tell him the truth without destroying what little remains of their fragile hope? Her gaze drifted downward, watching the ground rush past with each gentle sway. How much longer can I keep hiding? she questioned herself. The truth is like a wound that won’t heal. It’s just waiting to be uncovered, and when it is, everything could fall apart. A tear slipped down her cheek, and she quickly wiped it away, annoyed at her own weakness. I wish I could run away from this pain, from the choices that threaten to tear me apart. She closed her eyes briefly, breathing in the cool air, trying to gather strength. But deep inside, she knew that no matter how much she wished it, she couldn’t hide forever. The truth was coming, whether she was ready or not. And when it did, she would have to face whatever consequences lay ahead—alone or with those she loved.
