The forest outside the cabin was quiet, too quiet.
Alex and I had been training all night under the moonlight. My hands still tingled from the energy coursing through me, the pull of my own blood calling to him stronger than ever. Every time our eyes met, the tether tightened, and I felt my heartbeat syncing to his. Dangerous, intoxicating, undeniable.
And then I heard it.
A rustle. Not wind, not leaves. Something deliberate. Eyes on us.
“Did you hear that?” I whispered.
Alex stiffened, moving in front of me like a shield. “Stay calm. Don’t make a sound.”
I swallowed, my senses screaming. I could smell them before I could see them, fur, sweat, musk. Wolves. Not the ones who’d cornered him before, but younger, smaller, testing us. Scouting.
I felt something stir inside me, a dangerous surge of power that I hadn’t felt before. The pull of the blood. The moon. The bond with Alex.
“They’re close,” I said, voice trembling.
“They are,” he replied, eyes narrowing, gold flickering in the moonlight. “And they won’t leave without a fight.”
I wanted to step back, but the pull from Alex kept me rooted.
“Trust me?” he asked, voice low, almost a growl
I,...yes,” I said breathlessly.
“Good.”
He motioned with a hand, and suddenly my senses sharpened even more. I could see the shadows move between the trees, hear the smallest snapping of twigs, smell the metallic tang of blood in the air. My heartbeat synced with his again.
The wolves stepped into the clearing. Four of them, crouched low, eyes glowing faintly in the moonlight.
Alex’s muscles coiled like a predator ready to strike. “You don’t want this,” he said.
One of the wolves barked, a sharp, defiant sound. “She’s ours to test,” it growled.
“No,” Alex said firmly, “she’s mine.”
The words reverberated in my chest, in my bones, and something inside me answered.
“Mine too,” I whispered without thinking.
The lead wolf snarled and lunged.
Before I could react, Alex moved like lightning, intercepting it. But then he stepped back suddenly, eyes wide, and I felt it, the surge inside me.
I didn’t think. I just acted.
Energy shot from my hands, a bright, silver wave that struck the wolves. They skidded back, growling, ears pinned. One yelped and retreated into the trees.
Alex’s jaw clenched. “Sophia…”
“They,...” I gasped, breathless, “they came for us.”
“They always do,” he said, stepping closer. Our faces were inches apart. Gold in his eyes, moonlight washing over both of us. My chest heaved. His nearness was strong, warm and protective that it made my blood hum.
“I didn’t mean to…” I whispered.
“You didn’t,” he said softly. “But you can. And you will.”
He reached out, brushing a strand of hair from my face. His hand lingered on my cheek, thumb tracing the line of my jaw. My heartbeat spiked, and I felt the pull stronger than ever, its like the bond between us had awakened completely.
“You’re incredible,” he murmured, voice low, vibrating through me.
Before I could answer, the wolves retreated into the forest, but their eyes never left us. Watching. Waiting.
I realized then that every step I took from this moment on, every pulse in my veins, every tether with Alex… it wasn’t just training.
It was war.
And the first real battle had just begun
