The cabin was silent except for the crackle of the fireplace. Outside, the forest breathed around us, alive with shadows. I sat on the edge of a worn cot, hands folded tightly in my lap, heart hammering with every sound.
Alex stood across from me, arms crossed, eyes dark and unreadable. “We start tonight,” he said simply.
I swallowed hard. “Start what?”
“Control,” he said. “Your power. You can’t fight what’s coming if you don’t know what you’re capable of.”
I shook my head. “I don’t even know what I am.”
He stepped closer, and I felt that familiar pull again, the tether between us tightening. “You’re an Alpha Vampire,” he said. “Like your mother. And like her, you will be hunted. You have to learn to survive before they find you.”
I felt fear coiling in my chest, but also… something else. Something dangerous and exciting.
He motioned toward the clearing behind the cabin. “Outside. The moon is high. It’s the best time for your first lesson.”
We moved into the night. Moonlight washed over the clearing, silver and electric. I could feel the air thrumming with energy. My heartbeat echoed in my ears as Alex stood a few feet away, watching me like a predator measuring prey, and not like the enemy I had hated in high school, but like someone who believed in me.
“First,” he said, voice low, “you need to feel your blood. Not fear it. Not fight it. Let it guide you.”
I clenched my fists. “It’s… hard.”
He walked toward me slowly; gaze locked on mine. “I know. That’s why I’m here. Feel it. Now.”
I closed my eyes and let my mind drift to the slow, steady beat of my heart. Then to the blood beneath my skin.
It pulsed. Vibrated. Whispered.
Something ancient stirred, like a tide I couldn’t resist.
Alex’s voice cut through the rush: “Good. Now reach out. Not with your hands, with your blood. Pull energy from the moon. From the earth. From yourself.”
I tensed. My vision blurred, shadows deepened, and then, light exploded behind my eyelids. I felt power surge through me, coursing from my fingertips to my chest, filling me with heat and cold all at once.
And then a voice, a whisper I hadn’t known existed had cut through the night:
“Mine.”
I gasped, stumbling back.
Alex caught me instantly. His golden eyes were fierce. “Focus. Don’t let it scare you.”
“I… it’s like something inside me is awake!”
“Yes,” he said, voice low and steady. “And it’s recognizing me. Your blood knows mine. That bond, don’t fight it. Control it.”
I trembled, a mix of fear and thrill coursing through me. My hands glowed faintly in the moonlight as energy pulsed from me. I could feel the forest, the cabin, even Alex, alive.
“Good,” he said, eyes darkening with intensity. “Now, move it. Shape it. Bend it to your will.”
I raised my hands, and instinctively, a ripple of energy shot toward the earth. The ground beneath my feet trembled slightly. I stumbled backward, breathless, exhilarated, terrified.
Alex caught me again, his grip steady, grounding me. Our faces were close, a little too close and I felt the pull stronger than ever.
“You’re powerful,” he said softly, almost to himself. “More than I imagined.”
My heart thudded. “Am I… dangerous?”
He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he pressed a finger to my lips. “Only if you let others define it. With me… you’re unstoppable.”
Heat rushed to my cheeks. The bond between us thrummed with a tension that was more than training, more than survival, it was us.
And in that moonlit clearing, I realized: I was no longer just Sophia Carter.
I was a predator. A legend.
And Alex Montclaire, once my enemy, once my impossible crush, was no longer just the boy I hated. He was my anchor, my danger, and maybe… the only one who could keep up with me.
Behind the trees, I felt them watching again. Wolves. Or maybe vampires. I didn’t care.
Not yet.
Because I had Alex.
And together… we were unstoppable.
