Chapter 8(Betrayal Within)

438 Words
The night air was thick with tension as Sienna followed Lucian and Marcus through the pack house. Every step felt heavier than the last, as if the walls themselves were closing in. When they reached the council room, a cold shiver crawled up Sienna’s spine. There, carved into the wooden table at the center of the room, were the words: The Heir Will Fall. The letters were jagged, violent—like claw marks dug deep into the wood. Lucian’s eyes darkened. “Who knew about the bloodline?” Marcus didn’t answer immediately. His gaze darted to Sienna, then back to Lucian. Sienna’s heart thudded painfully against her ribs. She wrapped her arms around herself, feeling exposed under their scrutiny. “No one outside this room should know,” Marcus finally said. “Unless... unless someone talked.” Lucian turned to Sienna. “Did you tell anyone?” “No!” she gasped, hurt flashing across her face. “I would never—” “I believe you,” Lucian said firmly, stepping closer to shield her from Marcus’s accusing stare. But the doubt had already been planted. Sienna could feel it—an invisible wedge driving itself between them all. Marcus crossed his arms. “We have a traitor. And they’re close enough to us to leave a message under our noses.” Lucian nodded grimly. “Then we smoke them out.” He barked orders to Marcus, sending him to tighten the patrols and lock down the territory. As Marcus stormed out, Lucian turned back to Sienna. “You need to stay hidden for now,” he said. “No one can know where you are. Not even the others.” Fear coiled tighter inside her. “Are you... sending me away?” Lucian hesitated. His face, usually so unreadable, flickered with emotion. “I’ll come with you,” he said. “Wherever you go, I go.” Sienna’s throat tightened. She had spent so much of her life feeling abandoned—by her parents, by fate itself. And now here was Lucian, offering to stand beside her even when the world wanted her destroyed. She nodded. “Okay.” They packed quickly. Just the essentials—nothing that could tie them to the pack. Sienna watched Lucian move with sharp efficiency, his every action screaming one truth: he would fight for her. But as they slipped out into the night, a figure watched from the shadows. Unseen. Unheard. And as Lucian and Sienna disappeared into the forest, the figure smiled. Because betrayal didn’t always come from enemies. Sometimes... it came from the ones you trusted most.
