Chapter 7: Secrets in the Shadows The moon hung low, casting a silver path through the darkened forest as Sienna and Lucian made their way back to the pack house. Neither spoke. The weight of what had happened at the altar hung heavily between them, as thick as the mist curling at their feet. Sienna’s mind raced. If she was truly the heir to some ancient bloodline, what did that make her? A threat? A weapon? And what would the others do if they found out? When they reached the edge of the trees, Lucian pulled her to a stop. “You can’t tell anyone about tonight,” he said, his voice low, urgent. “Not even the ones you trust.” “Why?” Sienna asked, frustration flaring. “They deserve to know. Maybe they can help.” Lucian’s jaw tightened. “The council has its own agenda. They fear anything they can't control. If they learn about your bloodline, they might decide it's safer to eliminate you... before the prophecy has a chance to come true.” Sienna’s stomach twisted into knots. All her life, she had craved acceptance, belonging. And now, the truth could tear everything away before she even had a chance to prove herself. “I’ll protect you,” Lucian added fiercely. “No matter what it costs.” Sienna searched his face. For the first time, she saw more than the hard, ruthless alpha everyone else feared. She saw the man beneath—the one willing to risk everything for her. A flicker of warmth ignited between them, but Sienna pushed it down. Now wasn’t the time for emotions. Not when survival was at stake. They slipped back into the pack house, careful not to draw attention. But the moment they stepped inside, a sharp voice cut through the silence. “Where have you two been?” Sienna flinched. Beta Marcus stood near the stairs, his arms crossed, suspicion blazing in his dark eyes. “We went for a run,” Lucian said smoothly, his face a mask of indifference. “Needed to clear our heads.” Marcus didn’t look convinced. His gaze lingered on Sienna, and she felt a shiver run down her spine. He knows something’s off. “We’ve had a breach,” Marcus said, his tone grim. “Someone crossed the borders tonight. Left... a message.” Lucian stiffened. “What kind of message?” Marcus hesitated, then said darkly, “They know about the heir.” Sienna’s blood ran cold. Lucian stepped forward, radiating authority. “Show me.” Marcus nodded and turned away, but not before casting Sienna another sharp glance. As they followed him down the hall, Sienna realized something terrible: It wasn’t just her life at risk anymore. The secret was out—and whoever was coming for her wasn’t going to stop until they had either claimed her… or destroyed her. And worst of all, she didn’t know if everyone under this roof could truly be trusted.
