A Guardian's Lie

735 Words
Elyndra did not look like a woman in an ambush. Silver hair in crown braids. A green dress poured around her. Hands folded like she came for tea. Only her eyes gave her away. And only to me. I learned to read them for ten years. Right now, they were furious. "Lower the blade, child," she said sweetly. The sweet voice she uses when she wants room to think she is harmless. "You're embarrassing yourself." I didn't move. Draven's hand is still locked around my wrist. Not moving. Like he had all night to decide what to do with me. "You told me he attacked without warning," I said to her, voice low. "You told me no one survived from his side. Council ruling was final." "Council ruling IS final," Elyndra said smoothly. "Whatever lies this animal fed you in ninety seconds, don't believe him over ten years of my care." "I haven't said a word," Draven said. His eyes never left my face. "She figured it out herself. Give her credit." Around us, the orchestra still played. Wolves still laughed. No one stared. That was deliberate. Whatever happens now, Draven doesn't want witnesses. "East wing," he said. Not loud. But every guard moved. Every exit I counted — blocked. "You will not touch her," Elyndra snapped. And for the first time tonight, her mask cracked. Teeth showed. Old Alpha power rose like black water. "She just tried to put a knife in my ribs," Draven said, almost amused. "I think we're past where her protection is yours." He turned to me. And for a second, the predator 's face slipped. It looked almost like a question. "Come with me," he said. No command. Offer shaped like command. "Or don't. But if you run, you'll run from your own mate for the rest of your life. And I don't think you run from anything." I hated that he was right. Hated more that traitor part of me — the part that went silent when our eyes met — wanted to go with him. Wanted to know what he knows. "If I go, it's to find the truth. Not because of —" I couldn't say mate. Saying it makes it real. "I wouldn't dream otherwise," he said. And let go of my wrist. I didn't run. The East wing was a different world. Stone, not marble. Torchlight, not chandeliers. Built for war, not parties. Draven led with no guard at his back. Message: _I am not afraid of you. Even now._ Study. Books older than the pack itself. He closed the door. And for the first time all night, his mask slipped. "Ten years," he said, voice rough now, not smooth. "Ten years of wolves come for my throat for a m******e I didn't commit. Not one had your eyes." "Careful. Almost sounded like a confession." "It's true. Which must feel the same as a confession coming from me." He pulled a thin leather folder from the locked cabinet. Slammed on the desk between us. Didn't open. "Ten years I tried to find who burned Silverthorn. Never found evidence pointing at me. Funny, if I did it." "Alpha Council ruled—" "Council ruled based on evidence handed to them," he said. "Evidence I was never allowed to see. Evidence gathered and delivered by exactly one witness." I still went. "No," I whispered. "Ask her," he said. "Ask your guardian how she alone survived the m******e that killed every soul in Silverthorn. Including a seven-year-old girl who apparently did not die after all." The room was tilted. "She saved my life," I said. The voice shook. "I don't doubt," he said, quiet now, gentle, worse than shouting. "I want you to ask why." My hand grabbed the desk to stay standing. Against truth I refused ten years to consider. The woman who raised me. Fed me. Trained me. Wept with me over graves — Might have dug those graves herself. The door opened behind me. No knock. Elyndra in frame. No smile now. Silver eyes are flat and cold. Look I never saw in ten years of trusting her with my life. "I did warn you," she said softly, "not to come tonight." For first time since m******e that took everything, I realized — I have no idea which wolf in this room is telling the truth. And both of them want to keep me.
