The Message

Draven was gone before raven's second call finished. One second beside the desk. Next — vanished. I followed, blade back in hand. Ten years training overrode fragile trust. Whatever this was, I face it armed. Raven on outer corridor sill. Parchment tied to leg with black thread. The bird didn't move as Draven untied. His face hardened as he read. Handed to me without a word. Four lines. No signature. _She has seen the cabinet._ _Move the girl before she asks wrong question._ _The Council cannot know what she is until we're ready._ _Burn this._ Chill down spine. Read again. Third time. "What she is," I said quietly, eyes up to him. "Not who." Draven jaw tight. "I noticed." "This was sent tonight. After I agreed to stay." My mind raced. Who knew where I was? What did I learn? That I opened the cabinet? Someone watching. Right now. "Someone in this house knows everything." "Or someone outside it." He turned parchment, fingers paused on black knots. Recognition flickered. "This binding is Ravenmere seal-knot." My stomach dropped. "Elyndra." "Or someone trained by her." Soft sound — door opening far down corridor. Both went still. Predator-still. Footsteps. Measured. Familiar. Malrik Thornveil. Nightshade Beta. Still in ball formalwear, immaculate. Expression calm. Too calm. "My Alpha." Head inclined. Eyes flicked to parchment in Draven's hand then back. "Heard an incident at the ball. Come to see if you need anything." "We're fine." Draven voice flat. Careful. Malrik's eyes shifted to me. Slow. Up and down. Like looking at things, not people. "The girl? The one who tried to kill you?" Draven didn't hesitate. "She is my mate." Something flickered behind Malrik's gaze. Gone quick I almost imagined. "And she will remain under Nightshade protection." If revelation shocked him, he hid it well. Too well. A man learning his Alpha's would-be assassin's fated mate should react. Shock. Curiosity. Something. Malrik showed nothing. Smile smoothly. Polished. Practiced. Fake. "Of course, my Alpha. I'll see the east wing secured for her." Then turned and walked away. No questions. No surprise. Footsteps faded. "You trust him," I said. Draven gaze fixed on an empty corridor. "With my life." Answer immediately. But something in my voice cracked. Barely visible. But there. "You don't sound certain." Seconds, he didn't answer. Finally exhaled. "I've trusted Malrik for six years. Tonight was the first time I ever wondered if that was a mistake." Later, I sat alone in a room prepared for me. Luxurious. Guards outside are not subtle. Tested door twice. Locked from outside. Not just inside. Sanctuary. Cage. Depends how generous I feel. Moonlight spilled through a tall window. I stared at the reflection in the glass. Familiar. Yet suddenly strange. Like looking at someone I hadn't met yet. _The Council cannot know what she is._ Not who. What. Message not warning about what I knew. Warning about what I was becoming. Shiver down my spine. More terrifying than any lie. Outside, deep in Nightshade territory, wolves howled. Long. Low. Ancient. Hair raised on back of neck. For the first time since arriving, I was certain of one thing. The m******e was never beginning. Only first move. And something old watched me for ten years, waiting for me to finally ask the wrong question. The door slammed open. Draven. No knock. Eyes black with fury, gold almost gone. "We have a problem," he said. He crossed in three strides, grabbed my wrist, pulled me up hard against him. My back hit his chest. His arm around my waist. Cage. "That raven wasn't from outside," he growled against my ear, voice shaking with Alpha rage I never heard before. "It was sent from inside the east wing. From the room next to yours." My blood iced. "Someone in this corridor just told Council what you are, little mate." His grip tightened. "And the Council kills what it doesn't understand. So you are not sleeping here tonight." He dragged me toward the door. Toward HIS scent. HIS wing. "You sleep in my bed. Under my guards. Under ME. Or you don't see the sunrise."
