At the northern region, atop a snowy mountain, stood a tall and beautiful building. The structure, crafted from white marble, blended seamlessly with the snow-covered landscape. Surrounding the building was a compound marking its territory. Along the walls of the compound were lines of white pines, red pines, eastern white cedars, and birches. A huge European-style black gate, adorned with wolf emblems on both doors, guarded the entrance. The main door, situated at the top of a long staircase, was made of wood and engraved with ancient magical words and a crescent moon at its center. Five pillars stood proudly at the entrance, each representing one of the five packs of the northern region. These pillars were intricately carved with significant events, people, and dates related to their respective packs. This magnificent building, known as "The Nexus Hall," was situated on neutral grounds.
Despite the building's beauty, the outside situation was anything but peaceful. Cars were parked everywhere in front of the hall, and wolves stood guard, both in human and wolf form. They hailed from the five northern packs: Blue Crescent, Blue Fang, Shadow Crest, Indigo Moon, and Thunder Paw.
Inside the building, the Alphas of all five northern packs were gathered for an urgent meeting. Seated around a round table were Alpha Balthazar of the Blue Crescent pack, Alpha Darius Steelclaw of the Blue Fang pack, Alpha Thorne Nightshade of the Shadow Crest pack, Alpha Orion Stormrider of the Indigo Moon pack, and Alpha Zephyr Thunderstrike of the Thunder Paw pack. Behind each Alpha stood their respective Beta. The agenda was serious: to discuss the increase in rogue attacks, strategies to strengthen border security, the status of Alpha Darius Steelclaw and his Blue Fang pack, and the recent rogue assault on the Sapphire Claw pack, one of the largest in recent memory of Southern region.
This meeting was convened by Alpha Balthazar of the Blue Crescent pack. As the organizer, he spoke first. “Greetings, Alphas. Thank you for coming on such short notice. I trust you all received the agenda for today’s meeting?”
Alpha Orion replied, “Thank you for arranging this, Alpha Balthazar. We were all concerned about the rogue attack on the Sapphire Claw pack. It’s one of the largest packs in the southern region and centrally located. How dare the rogues launch such an attack? From the reports I’ve seen, it was a meticulously planned assault, similar to the one on the Blue Fang pack. Fortunately, there were no casualties, just some injuries.”
Alpha Zephyr agreed with Alpha Orion and added, “Indeed. It’s remarkable how well Sapphire Claw defended themselves. The number of rogues that attacked was nearly 300, double the number that attacked Blue Fang. Despite this, they managed to hold their ground without any assistance from neighboring packs. We should definitely consider adopting some of their security techniques. We need to discuss this with Alpha Lucian.”
Alpha Thorne smirked and interjected, “There’s nothing particularly astonishing about it. As Orion mentioned, Sapphire Claw is not only the largest pack but also the wealthiest. They have the resources to protect themselves, which is why they managed to fend off the rogues.” His voice carried a hint of jealousy, anger, and disdain. Alpha Orion’s frustration was palpable.
Alpha Balthazar interrupted, “Let’s maintain respect, Alpha Darius. We are all Alphas here and should address each other by our titles within this hall. You may use first names once we step outside.”
Alpha Orion responded curtly, “We’re not friends, just allies.” Meanwhile, Alpha Darius appeared distracted and disconnected from the discussion. His Beta, Ronan Ironclad, noticed his Alpha’s behavior and nudged him to pay attention.
Alpha Balthazar addressed Alpha Darius, “Alpha Darius, it’s been two months since the rogue attack and the loss of your Luna. I understand that it’s difficult to move past the death of your mate, but as an Alpha, you need to compose yourself. Your pack is also suffering from the aftermath of the attack. Now is not the time to be immersed in grief. Instead, focus on helping your pack recover and strengthening your borders. We are all here to support you in whatever way you need. Your pack needs their leader. Without you, they cannot thrive. You have had ample time to grieve. While the loss of Luna Freya will always leave a void in your heart, it’s crucial that you step up and lead your pack.”
Ronan nodded behind Alpha Darius, indicating that Balthazar was right. Alpha Darius, deeply affected by the mention of Freya, looked visibly sad and sat in silence. A pin-drop silence fell over the hall as everyone gave Darius time to process and respond. After a tense ten minutes, Alpha Darius finally spoke, but his words left everyone stunned, especially Ronan, who was visibly shaken.
"I want to MERGE my pack!" Alpha Darius announced. The merging process involves dissolving your pack and joining the neighboring pack with whom you share your border, acknowledging the new pack and its Alpha as your own. Merging rights remain with the Alpha, but you need the vote of confidence from your entourage to proceed.
The room fell silent as everyone processed his shocking declaration. Alpha Thorne was about to speak, but Alpha Darius raised his hand to silence him. Standing up from his chair, he continued,
"This decision is not just a result of my grief, though it is one of the reasons. Since losing my mate, I have lost confidence in my own capabilities. This attack happened because we were a smaller pack and many of our warriors were injured from continuous rogue assaults. After much thought, I’ve concluded that, without an heir or a strong leader in my pack, it’s better to merge with another pack than to let my pack members die at the hands of rogues."
Alpha Zephyr spoke up, "This isn’t an easy decision. You can’t make it without consulting your pack members first. From the looks of it, even your Beta isn’t aware of this. Merging means not only losing your throne but also erasing your pack’s identity. The Blue Fang pack will cease to exist. I hope you understand the implications."
Alpha Thorne added, "You only have two options for merging: either with my Shadow Crest pack or with the Blue Crescent pack. How do you plan to choose?"
Alpha Orion interjected, "The decision to merge ultimately rests with the Alpha of the pack. However, it's crucial to consult your pack members first. Your advisor’s opinion is also significant. Even if you decide to merge with one of the packs, you’ll need the votes of your Advisor, Beta, and Gamma to select the pack. They will be losing their ranks as well."
Alpha Balthazar consoled his dear friend Darius, "Dear Darius, I know what you are going through, but I want you to rethink your decision, my friend. Discuss it with your pack members."
Alpha Darius looked at Balthazar and smiled faintly, "Balthazar, my friend, I have made my decision. Don’t worry; I have discussed this with my advisor and Gamma, and we’ve come to this conclusion together. However, I didn’t have the heart to face Ronan and tell him directly," he admitted, turning to Ronan with a look of shame.
"Ronan, I'm sorry. I couldn’t bring myself to tell you. I thought it would be best if you heard it here."
Ronan stepped forward and hugged Darius tightly. "Darius, I know how difficult this decision must have been—giving up your Alpha rank and living under the roof of another. I trust your judgment completely. Whatever you decide, I will stand with you."
But Alpha Thorne interjected, "We need to hear this decision from your advisor and Gamma as well. Otherwise, it won’t be settled."
Alpha Darius smirked at Thorne and replied, "I knew you would say something like this, which is why I brought them with me this time. They are outside the Nexus Hall."
Alpha Orion leaned forward, intrigued. "So, it looks like you've made your decision. Now, we all want to know— which pack have you decided to join?"
With a deep breath, Alpha Darius looked around the room, meeting the eyes of each Alpha present. Finally, he announced the name of the pack that his Blue Fang would merge with.
