Chapter TenKate answered the phone reluctantly and half asleep in the early morning hours, saying, “Hello, who's calling?” The line was quiet with no reply, just the sound of two knives striking against one another. She listened a moment longer to make sure she'd heard right. “Hello, what do you want?” Still, there's no response, only the sound of metal hitting against metal.
She hung up the phone. Eerie, she thought. Glancing at the clock, she decided to wait until first light to call Jake about the bizarre phone call. She'd seen too many movies about mobsters to let this go easily. It sounded like someone was hinting they'd carve her up or cause injury in some way.
