Chapter Seven: The Bet That Changed Everything

787 Words
The apartment was quiet except for the rhythmic tap of my fingers on my laptop. I stared at my email inbox, waiting for a reply that wasn’t coming. Another rejection. Another “thank you, but we’ve chosen someone else.” I closed the laptop with a frustrated sigh and leaned back in my chair, staring at the ceiling. For weeks, I’d been pushing myself, taking every small gig I could find, but the high-paying jobs—the ones that could actually make a difference—still felt out of reach. “You okay in there?” Patricia called from the living room. “No,” I muttered. She appeared in the doorway, holding a bowl of popcorn. “What happened?” I shook my head. “Nothing. Just another rejection.” Patricia plopped down on the bed beside me, crunching loudly on a handful of popcorn. “You know what your problem is?” “Please, enlighten me,” I said dryly. “You’re playing it too safe,” she said, tossing another piece into her mouth. I frowned. “What’s that supposed to mean?” “You’re working hard, Lizzie. But sometimes, you’ve gotta take risks if you want big rewards.” I raised an eyebrow. “Like your betting?” “Exactly!” Patricia grinned, grabbing her phone. “Speaking of which . . .” She scrolled through an app before shoving the screen in my face. “What is this?” “It’s a ticket I found online. A parlay. High stakes, crazy odds, but if it hits? You’d make millions.” I laughed humorlessly. “Millions? Yeah, right.” “I’m serious!” she said, leaning closer. “Look at the payout. This could change your life.” I glanced at the screen, the numbers blurring together in my frustration. The odds were absurd, but the potential payout—over a million dollars—was glaring at me like a beacon of hope. “Come on,” Patricia urged. “Just try it. You’ve got savings, don’t you?” “That money is for emergencies,” I said, though my resolve was already crumbling. “This is an emergency!” she said dramatically. “You’re stuck, Lizzie. This could be your way out.” I stared at the screen, the weight of her words settling over me. Later that night, as I lay in bed, I couldn’t stop thinking about the ticket. My logical side screamed at me to ignore it, to play it safe. But a smaller, louder voice whispered something else: What if? What if it worked? What if this was the risk I needed to take? By the time I grabbed my phone and opened the app, my heart was pounding so loudly I could barely think. My savings sat at $31,000—not much, but enough to make me hesitate. “If I’m going to risk it,” I muttered to myself, “it better be worth it.” With trembling fingers, I placed the bet. Thirty-one thousand dollars. All of it. I stared at the confirmation screen, a knot tightening in my stomach. It was done. . . . The next morning, Patricia’s excited shriek jolted me awake. “Lizzie!” she yelled, bursting into my room. “Get up! You won’t believe this!” “What—what’s going on?” I mumbled, sitting up groggily. “The ticket!” she said, shaking her phone in my face. “It hit! You won!” For a moment, her words didn’t register. “What?” “You won, Lizzie!” she repeated, her grin so wide it practically glowed. “Check your account!” Still half-asleep, I grabbed my phone and opened the app. My eyes widened as I stared at the balance. $1,245,000. I blinked, certain I was seeing things. But the number didn’t change. “I—” My voice caught in my throat. “This can’t be real.” “Oh, it’s real,” Patricia said, practically bouncing with excitement. “You’re a millionaire now!” I stared at the screen, my hands trembling. The reality of what had just happened hit me like a tidal wave. “Holy . . . I—I don’t even know what to say.” “Say you’re taking me out to celebrate,” Patricia teased, but her grin softened as she sat beside me. “Lizzie, this is it. This is your chance to do something big.” I nodded slowly, my mind racing. For so long, I’d felt stuck, invisible, powerless. But now, for the first time in my life, the possibilities felt endless. This wasn’t just luck. This was my chance to change everything.
