The charged air between them

The rain didn’t announce itself. It just… started. One moment the city outside the windows was sharp and glittering, all lights and movement, and the next it softened, blurred, the glass streaked with thin silver lines. The sound followed after—quiet at first, a gentle tapping that slowly grew steadier, fuller, like the city was finally exhaling. I noticed it before Asher did. I moved closer to the window, resting my palm against the cool glass, watching the rain smear the lights below into something almost dreamlike. Everything looked farther away when it rained. Safer somehow. Like the world was giving you permission to slow down. “It’s raining,” I said softly. Behind me, I heard him stop walking. “I can see that,” he replied, but his voice had changed. Less guarded. Less sharp.
