She was amazing. When our teacher called her his star pupil, I was confused, but watching her martial arts, I finally understood. Her spins and kicks and just everything about her was mesmerizing. Her chest and arms were covered in scars and partially healed cuts that looked seriously bad. Fresh scars. Not fresh like "I got cut awhile ago and that cut healed into a scar in the last few days" but more like she had been seriously injured in the last year and it's been taking its time healing.
She had tears leaking out of her eyes when she finally finished, however she seemed much more lively. She was scanning the crowd like she was looking for someone and then we locked eyes. I saw as the sorrow and pain entered her eyes before her blank look came back. I felt my phone buzz and glanced at it quickly.
Wolfe: 911 UNKNOWN NUMBER TEXTED. A?
I quickly texted back: Forward it to me.
Wolfe: 1 ATTACHMENT SENT clicking into it I saw a picture of Lilah. It was older by a few years, but she was genuinely happy. KEEP HER SAFE BOYS.
I texted back: I think so. Should we call Auntie?
Wolfe: I DON'T KNOW. WHY WOULD HE WANT US TO KEEP HER SAFE?
Text the number back. Ask.
Lilah somehow ended up sitting next to me in the last two classes of the day. In the last class, I slipped her a note saying, "Why don't you ever talk? Your voice is beautiful."
She slipped it back saying, "I almost always can't talk." I slipped her a question mark. "I wake up screaming most of the time."
I said, "Why?"
As she was responding, I received another text. Unknown Number: 1 attachment: THE PERSON SHE FELL IN LOVE WITH WAS YOUR PERSONALITY.
I jumped when the teacher called my name. I responded, "The answer to the question is b."
She moved on to Lilah who softly and hoarsely said, "a2+b2=c2. a2+b2=40 2^2+b2=c2. a2+6^2=c2. So, 4+36=40, therefore 40=40."
Half the class stared blankly at her. That was the most any of us had heard her say. She then slipped the note back to me saying, "Nightmares."
"Can I get your number?"
I chewed on the inside of my cheek as she scribbled a bunch of numbers. I smiled and added it to my phone before quickly texting her and scribbling back, "Just sent you a text."
the worst part about the whole now passing incident was that we kept accidentally touching each other And I know that I felt some tingles and it was way too common for it to be static electricity.
~End of the day~
Wolfe yelled my name as he ran to catch up with me. I paused and waited for him to catch up. He was panting as he said, "Alexei was her best friend."
I froze. "What do you mean?"
He showed me a picture on his phone of Lilah and Alexei. "They lived next door to each other."
I sighed in frustration and handed him my phone. "I got that text while in Trig."
"The person she fell in love with was your personality? What the heck does that mean?"
I shrugged. "I don't understand the attachment either."
He opened it and almost dropped my phone. "Dude! That's...HIS necklace!" I looked at him quizzically. "The necklace that she's wearing in this picture. It's his!" He paused and then hissed, "She's coming!"
I felt her presence and then a touch on my arm. I looked down and saw her eyes soften. Lilly came up behind her and said to me, "Her voice is too sore, but she wanted to thank you. She said that you remind her of someone and it made her day slightly easier." She glanced at Lilah. "Oh! Li! Your necklace! It's all twisted!"
Wolfe and I both looked at her neck as Lilly started to fix it. He subtly shook his head. It was the same necklace. I said, "That's a cool necklace. Where'd you get it?"
Her face fell again and Lilly responded, "It was a gift."
I knew what she was going to say but I had to ask. "Was it from someone special?"
She smiled and pressed on her tattoo on her wrist. "The very person you remind her of. It's the last thing she has of him."
"May I ask, who was he to you?"
Lilah whimpered, "My best friend and the person I fell in love with."
I felt my heart squeeze, but I'm not entirely sure why. Wolfe squeezed my arm and Lilly said to her, "Li, it's fine to move on. it's time."
She smiled sadly. "I know, Lil. I'm trying."
I nodded to the girls and said, "Well, we gotta get to work." I sighed, once they left. "Text that number. There's something going on that we don't know. She acts like something is her fault. I'm sure we're missing something."
Wolfe hesitated. "Why are you doing this, Jax?"
I paused. "I can't keep my eyes off of her and I need to know what happened to Alexei."
