Chapter 3 The sun hung high in the clear blue sky, casting a warm glow over the sprawling campus of Holloway University. Ariel stepped off the bus with her heart racing, a mix of excitement and nerves swirling in her stomach. At 21, she was tall and strikingly beautiful, her skin a rich, deep brown that radiated warmth in the sunlight. Her pointed nose complemented her large, expressive eyes that sparkled with curiosity and determination. And when she smiled, two adorable dimples appeared, giving her an air of infectious joy. She hefted her luggage an oversized suitcase and a tote bag onto her shoulder, taking a moment to absorb the bustling atmosphere around her. Students chatted and laughed, some hugging tightly, others waving goodbye as they parted ways. “This is it,” Ariel whispered to herself, her voice barely audible over the lively sounds. “Nothing will come between me and my studies.” With renewed confidence, she walked toward the grand gates of the university, her heels clicking against the pavement. As she passed through the ornate entrance, Ariel felt a thrill course through her body. It was a place she had dreamed of attending, a sanctuary of learning where she could grow and thrive. Still, she felt a pang of uncertainty. It was her first time away from home, away from everything familiar, and she hoped she would fit in seamlessly. With her phone in hand, she pulled up the university’s map, squinting at the tiny screen that showed her current location. “Student accommodations,” she muttered, trying to find her way. A few students nearby chatted animatedly, but she hesitated to interrupt. Instead, she made a beeline for a nearby group of students, all of whom were immersed in their own conversations. They seemed friendly enough; she could see smiles dancing across their faces. “Excuse me,” Ariel said, summoning her courage as she approached. “Can you tell me how to get to the school accommodation lodge? I just arrived and I’m a bit lost.” A girl with brightly colored hair fluffy curls adorned with a vibrant headband turned towards Ariel, her eyes lighting up with enthusiasm. “Of course! I’m Cynthia!” she exclaimed, stepping forward with a warm smile. “You’re in luck! I’m actually heading that way. I can walk with you.” “Thank you so much! I’m Ariel,” she replied, relieved. “I just got here, and it’s a bit overwhelming.” Cynthia grinned widely, her dimples matching Ariel’s as they instantly bonded over the shared trait. “Trust me, it can be. But you’ll love it here once you settle in. I remember my first day; it felt like walking into a whole new world.” As they walked side by side, Ariel felt her nerves start to fade. “What do you like most about the university?” Ariel asked, glancing at Cynthia and feeling grateful for this newfound connection. “Oh, that’s easy! The diversity,” Cynthia said, her eyes sparkling with excitement. “I mean, just look around! People from all walks of life, all types of stories. It’s inspiring! I’ve met incredible friends here who’ve opened my eyes to so many things.” “I agree! That was a big draw for me,” Ariel replied. “I wanted a place where I could learn from different perspectives.” Cynthia nodded enthusiastically. “Exactly! And you’re studying…what? I mean, it’s obvious you’re going to be a star here!” “Thanks!” Ariel chuckled lightly, enjoying the camaraderie. “I’m majoring in psychology. I’ve always been fascinated by the human mind.” “Wow! That’s awesome!” Cynthia said, nodding. “I’m in sociology. Maybe we could even team up for projects someday!” “I’d love that!” Ariel responded, her heart lifting at the prospect of a new friendship. “It would be great to have someone to study with.” As they rounded a corner, the imposing building of the accommodation lodge came into view, with its red-brick façade and arched windows glimmering in the sunlight. It stood as a welcoming beacon to many students seeking refuge and camaraderie. “Here we are!” Cynthia announced, stepping up to the entrance. “Right in the heart of everything. You’ll love it inside; it’s cozy and homey.” They entered the lobby, which buzzed with the sounds of students chatting, filling out forms, and laughing. A warm atmosphere enveloped Ariel as the excitement bubbled within her. “Just sign in over there,” Cynthia pointed to a desk with a friendly-looking attendant. “She’ll get you sorted with your room and keys.” “Thank you for helping me!” Ariel said, sincerely grateful. “I didn’t expect to find someone so friendly on my first day.” “Anytime! We’ve all been where you are,” Cynthia replied, offering her a gentle nudge. “Just promise me that you won’t let anything stop you from enjoying your time here. You’re going to have a blast!” With a deep breath, Ariel moved toward the desk, adrenaline coursing through her as she filled out her information. A few moments later, she was handed a keycard, the weight of it feeling substantial in her palm. “Congratulations, roomie!” Cynthia said, grinning widely after Ariel completed the check-in process. “Roomie?” Ariel echoed, quirking an eyebrow as she her heart fluttered at the thought. Cynthia laughed, a bright sound that seemed to light up the room. “Not yet, but once you settle in, you’ll have to join me for lunch! It’s a rite of passage here a welcome party of sorts with our hallmates.” Ariel nodded, her heart swelling with warmth and anticipation. “I’d love that! Lead the way!” As they exited the lodge, the bright sunlight spilled over them, the sounds of laughter and conversations from students filling the air around them. The warmth of the day reflected the warmth of their growing friendship. “Wait until you see the campus café!” Cynthia said, leading the way down a charming brick path lined with budding trees. “They have the best coffee and pastries ’ve got to try the chocolate croissants.” Ariel felt a bubble of excitement erupt within her as they walked. “Sounds delicious! I’m in,” she said, her eyes shining. “You’re going to fit in perfectly here, Ariel. Just wait and see. This is just the beginning!” Cynthia smiled, her energy contagious. As they crossed the campus together, Ariel felt as if a new chapter was being written in her life, one filled with friendships, learning, and growth. Little did she know, this was only the start of a beautiful journey that would transform her life in unexpected ways. And with Cynthia by her side, she couldn't shake the feeling that she would face whatever challenges lay ahead with a fresh perspective. The future was bright, just like the sunny day enveloping them.
