Chapter 5: He Wrote "mate" and "pup"

2048 Words
***MICHAEL POV***     That was, without a doubt, the single best first day of the school year I could have ever imagined.  The thoughts of having my day loaded up with government and civics classes day in and day out excited me to no end.  I was obviously worried about another shoe dropping as a result of my good fortune, as no good thing in my life has ever come easy.  However, as I sat back at my desk and thought about the day as it unfolded, I made the decision that I was going to incessantly highlight the good that happened and walk out of the building with a smile on my face.     I looked at my watch and decided to pay Justin a visit.  I wanted to make sure I had the house ready for he and his wife's arrival.  When I looked inside his door, it looked like he was praying.  I wasn't sure what I was supposed to do, so I started to quietly back away to give him his peace.     "You don't have to go, Mike.  I'm just meditating for a while," he said, making me jump from shock.     "I...what..but...huh?" I stammered to him, which made him laugh.     "I have extremely good hearing, Mike.  Don't be alarmed," he said as he stood up and stretched.     "Good genetics?  I've had to do a lot of sneaking around in my life before, but that's a long story.  I tried to be as quiet as possible so you didn't get disturbed," I responded.     "I guess you can say it was good genes, but it's a lot more nuanced than that.  However, like you, that is a long story that is for another time," Justin stated, bouncing up to his feet.  "So, did you have a good first day?"     I instantly bubbled over with my trademark dramatic enthusiasm.  "Oh heavens, yes!  I can't believe the students that I had today.  My honors classes are so engaged with everything that I hit them with, and I can't wait to see what they come up with for their first projects of the semester.  I am truly happy with my first day," I said, taking a seat finally, having exhausted my nervous energy.  "Although, I did have one interesting answer to my get-to-know-you assignment."     "Oh really, what's that?"  Justin asked, reclining in his chair and having a long pull from a bottle of Gatorade.     "One student, Richard Robertson, answered the question of 'plans for after high school' to as 'finding my mate and having ten pups', which I found weird," I said, thinking back on reading the answer.  "I'm sure he meant finding a nice girl to settle down with and having a bunch of puppies."     I thought Justin had whipped his phone out and quickly texted someone about what I had just said, but it had to have been too fast for that to have happened.  I shook my head and laughed.  "Have you ever had anything like that happen on your first days of the semester?"     Justin laughed.  "Nah, most of my students are just trying to survive English so they can get their credit and graduate.  I mostly have the students that are behind on credits and are just trying to do just enough to get a passing grade," he responded.     "I gotcha.  Well, I have a quick trip to the liquor store to make.  What time are you and Kristy going to be by?  Does she want any water or juice or anything?"     "Orange juice.  It helps with her heartburn.  And we'll be there in two hours.  I have to have a stern word with someone before we stop by," Justin replied, furrowing his brow as he said that.     "God help that person," I stated.  I rose and strode to the door.  "See you soon, Buddy!"     "Can't wait!  Looking forward to it, Dude!"  he responded as I walked away. ***JUSTIN POV***     To say that I have been looking for an excuse to kick Richard Robertson's ass for some time is an understatement, and today might be my chance if his useless father goes with it.     Richard had turned 18 seven months ago and had been hoping to be Mira's mate for some time.  When he didn't feel the mate pull one way or the other, he decided to do nothing with his time to follow Mira around like a lost puppy every chance he got.  What didn't help was that his dad, who was my biggest pain in my ass and who I envisioned getting hit by a truck whenever I had downtime, openly encouraged him to pursue the connection and the mating.  Alpha James had been aware of the situation the day it started happening, and up until today, we had thought that it was going to be harmless.  However, that ended today.     When I got onto Crescent Woods territory, I mindlinked my dad Robert, the pack's current Beta, Mira, and Alpha James.     We've got an issue.  Something happened at school involving Richard Robertson, I linked.     Oh Goddess, what now?  Please tell me you're not trying to start bullshit with that family again, son.  I'll strip you of your Beta-in-Waiting title and give it to your brother, Dad said.     Mira laughed in the link.  Richard is annoying but harmless.  He won't do anything stupid.     He already has, Mira.  It involves Mike, I responded in the link.     Alpha James and Mira both instinctively growled at that.  I just texted Kristy.  Richard is at his cottage in the Delta village along the western territory.  Meet there? Mira asked.     Yes, I responded and immediately cut the link.  I parked my truck in the driveway of the packhouse and ran upstairs to the Beta floor.  Kristy met me in our bedroom.     "Please tell me Richard didn't run his mouth at school about Mira," Kristy asked with an extremely pissed off look in her eyes.     "No, if possible, it's worse," I said, throwing off my school clothes and putting on jeans and the closest concert t-shirt I could find.  "It involves the Alpha-in-Waiting, who I just met today at school."     Kristy squealed.  "You met Mira's mate?  That's so cool!  He's human, isn't he?"     "Yes," I responded when I put my running shoes on.  "Mike seems to be a really good man, and you and I are heading to his place tonight to chat with him.  See the invite on your phone," I quickly replied to Kristy's confused look on her face, as pregnancy brain had already made her memory consist of poorly ground up rabbit food.     "Oh.  Now I see it," Kristy said with a laugh as I spray myself with my cologne.  "How is the Alpha-in-Waiting in trouble already if he's still human and not involved in pack life yet?"     "Richard Robertson," I responded, and Kristy growled.     "d**k's useless son?  What did he do now?"     "Implied that Mira was his mate, actually wrote the words "mate" and "pup" on an assignment, and proceeded to give it to Mike, who, like you said, is still human and not involved in pack life yet."     "Goddess, give me a son who will rip Richard's d**k off and show it to him as he bleeds out!" Kristy yelled to the heavens.  "When is that guy going to turn his f*****g brain on?"     "No clue," I said as I finished tying my shoes.  "But that's what James, my dad, Mira, and I are going over to talk with him about," I said as I kissed Kristy's head.     "Good luck," she responded as I headed out the door.     I linked everyone else involved saying that I was heading over, and they jogged up to me over to the Delta cottages.  Deltas were primarily made up of the pack warriors and both of the pack satellite location captains in Nevada and Southern California respectively.  They're our pack's "jacks of all trades" wolves, with duties spanning from training, to patrols, to maintenance, to most earner positions in the pack.  These were the wolves who were expected to make a solid living for themselves and support the pack in their positions in several of the pack companies.  I obviously didn't know all of the ins and outs of everything, but if you were a Delta, you were expected to know a trade and do it well, a fact that was often lost on the Robertson line, who normally tried their best to work as little as possible in their entire pitiful existences.  That's one reason I had such little respect for d**k Robertson.  He was absolutely the most naturally intelligent in my dad's graduating class, and he was determined to do nothing with it.  In fact, whenever he would cause trouble and raise hell in school, my dad was often the one who'd get blamed for it.  It appeared he spread his talent for mediocrity to his son.     When the lot of us got to the Robertson cottage, Mira knocked on the door.  This is going to be fun, I thought to myself. ***MIRA POV***     I was hoping that the Goddess was looking down on me when we knocked on Richard's door because I wanted to take a piece of his nose off his face.  When I saw that it was him that opened the door, my right hand shot out in a jab, breaking his nose with a sickening crunch.     "Alright, you useless piece of s**t, why the f**k would you write something so stupid?" I yelled at him, as I put a left-footed kick right on his thigh, giving him a Charlie horse from hell.     "I don't even know what you're talking about, Baby.  Is this something you should do to your future Alpha?" he responded with a sneer.     "You are not my successor, you twerp!" yelled my dad, as d**k showed up at the door frame and threw an empty bourbon bottle at Uncle Robbie, who was standing behind Justin watching the whole thing.     "Just what do you think you're doing to my baby boy?"  he slurred.     "I'll tell you what he did, d**k.  He wrote "mate" and "pup" on a homework assignment and turned it in to his human teacher, who also just so happens to be your future Alpha," my dad explained through gritted teeth, as I kicked Richard in the balls as he was trying to get up.     "How the f**k can a human be the next Alpha?  It's just too bad you got an absolute slut for a daughter who decided to ignore the mate pull with my fantastic boy!"  d**k spat at my dad.  All that was good for was a roundhouse to his head, courtesy of yours truly.     "Now you listen here, Dickie.  I happen to be mated to your son's teacher.  If I find out that he's slipping any werewolf secrets to him again, we're going to revisit this, and it will end horribly for your son.  Don't think I can't have my dad banish your entire family, because he'll do it," I scream, with my dad stoically agreeing.     "Yes, Princess," d**k and Richard both gasped from the ground.     "Good.  Now, if you don't mind, my wife and I are going to be hanging out with the future Alpha.  Please learn that if you can't respect your elders, Richard, at least respect your betters," Justin warned as he walked off.     I'm glad you and Justin are heading to Mike's house for drinks tonight.  I don't know him yet, but I love him already.  When I heard him play music last night, it felt like he was playing for me, I linked Kristy.     Do you want me to see if I can get him to play again tonight?  Do you think you can be on patrol by his property in an hour and a half? she responded.     I'll check the Delta schedule, but I think I can swing that, I responded.     Good, she said back and cut the link.  The whole walk back to the packhouse, I thought of my future as the Luna.  All of them would be with Michael by my side.     Mira Joy Bartholomew.  I like the sound of that, I think to myself as I head to the packhouse kitchen for a coffee.  This was going to be a long night.
