*Chapter 1: THE ARRANGED WIFE*
_∼1800 words_
*LONDON. CANARY WHARF. 2029*
The papers were already on the desk.
Pen. Signature line. And him.
*DAMIEN HARTLEY.*
36. CEO of Hartley Capital. £4 Billion net worth.
Divorced once. No kids. No heart.
The papers called him "The Ice King of the City."
Across from him: *ZARA ADEBAYO.*
25. Nigerian. First class Economics from LSE.
Works 2 jobs. Sends money home to Lagos.
And today... a bride.
"Sign here," Damien said. No greeting.
"We’ll live like strangers. Separate rooms. Separate lives.
That’s the deal my mother made with your father."
He didn’t look up from his laptop.
"My mother wanted an ‘heir’ and ‘stability’.
Your father wanted his company debts cleared.
Don’t make this harder than it is."
Zara stared at the paper. *MARRIAGE CONTRACT.*
Duration: 3 years.
Clause 4: _No emotional involvement._
Clause 7: _Wife will attend 6 public events per year._
Her father’s voice in her head: _"Nwa m, this will save us."_
She picked up the pen.
*HISTORY LESSON #1: WHY SHE SAID YES*
Her father’s shipping company. 40 years.
Collapsed in 2027. Debts to Hartley Capital: £2.3 Million.
Damien’s mother came to Lagos.
"We don’t take companies," she said.
"We take wives. For my son."
Zara could’ve said no.
But 200 employees would lose jobs.
Her little brother Tunde would drop out of school.
So she said: "Yes, Ma."
*THE WEDDING*
No church. No white dress.
Registry office. 15 minutes. 2 witnesses.
Damien’s vows: "I will provide."
Zara’s vows: "I will."
That was it.
After: He put her in a car.
"The townhouse in Kensington is yours.
My PA will send you the calendar.
Don’t call me unless it’s an emergency."
He kissed her cheek. Cold.
And left.
*HOT: YEAR 1 - THE RULES*
*Rule 1: Cook*
He never ate it. Ate out every night.
But every 7PM, the table was set. For two.
*Rule 2: Clean*
His suits. His shirts. Folded perfectly.
He never thanked her.
*Rule 3: Don’t Ask*
When he came home at 3AM smelling of whiskey and perfume.
She said nothing. Just left water by his bed.
*Rule 4: Smile in Public*
6 events a year. She wore the dress.
Stood next to him. Held his arm.
Smiled for cameras.
At home: silence.
Tunde called from Lagos: "Sis, is he treating you well?"
Zara: "He’s providing, Tunde. That’s enough."
*SWEET: YEAR 2 - THE c***k*
December. London snow.
Damien came home at 2AM. Drunk.
Not from a woman. From the office.
He collapsed in the kitchen.
Zara found him there.
She didn’t wake him.
She took off his shoes.
Covered him with a blanket.
Made ginger tea. Left it on the counter.
With a note: _"Drink when you wake. Love, Your Wife."_
Next morning the tea was gone.
The note was gone.
He left for work without a word.
But that night: the table was set for two.
And he was sitting at it.
Staring at the food.
"Did you make this?" he asked.
"Yes, Husband," she said.
He ate in silence.
Left £5000 on the counter.
"For groceries."
That was the most he’d said to her in 18 months.
*THE TWIST: YEAR 3 - THE OTHER WOMAN*
Her name was *CLAIRE*.
Blonde. Model. His ex.
She showed up at the Kensington house.
"Darling, I’m back," she said, walking in.
"Damien and I are getting back together.
You can have the house. Just sign the divorce."
Zara was in the kitchen. Cooking.
Jollof rice. The smell filled the house.
Claire laughed. "You think cooking will keep him?"
Zara wiped her hands. Looked her in the eye.
"No," Zara said softly. "I think choosing him every day will."
Claire left. Furious.
That night Damien came home early.
Saw two plates on the table.
Saw Zara asleep on the couch, waiting up.
He sat. Ate alone.
Looked at her. Really looked.
For the first time in 3 years.
*END OF CHAPTER 1*
*3 YEARS LATER. DIVORCE DAY.*
The contract was on the same desk.
Damien slid it across.
"Sign here," he said. Voice rough.
Zara picked up the pen.
Her hand didn’t shake.
"Thank you, Husband," she said.
"For providing. For the roof. For keeping your word."
She signed.
Stood.
Turned to leave.
"Zara."
She stopped.
Damien was standing now.
The Ice King. With cracks in his voice.
"Who’s going to make the tea?"
"Who’s going to set the table?"
"Who’s going to..."
He swallowed.
"Who’s going to choose me, when I don’t deserve it?"
Zara turned.
Smiled. The same smile from 3 years ago.
"That was never in the contract, Damien."
She walked to the door.
His voice behind her, barely a whisper:
"I don’t want the contract anymore.
I want you."
