*THE WIFE WHO NEVER FOUGHT BACK*

*Chapter 4: BREAKFAST AND TRUTH*
_∼2000 words_
*LONDON. PECKHAM FLAT. 7:15 AM*
The kitchen smelled like smoke and coffee.
Damien stood by the stove in a hoodie.
A _hoodie_. The Ice King in grey sweatpants.
On the plate: 3 pancakes. Black on one side.
On the counter: 2 mugs. One said "World’s Best Nurse".
Zara watched from the doorway.
"This is the first time you’ve been in my home," she said.
Damien turned. Pan in hand.
"I know. I’m sorry it took a divorce to get here."
He set the plate down.
"So. Breakfast is... a work in progress."
Zara sat. Took a bite. Chewed.
"It’s terrible."
"I know."
"But the coffee’s good."
"I practiced. 4 times."
They both laughed.
And just like that, the tension broke.
*HOT: THE TRUTH HE HID*
Halfway through the coffee, Damien put his mug down.
"Zara. I need to tell you why I really married you."
Zara went still.
"It wasn’t just my mother. Or your father’s debt."
He stood. Paced.
"3 years ago. I was at my lowest.
Claire left me. The company almost tanked.
I was... empty."
He looked at her.
"Then I met you. At the debt meeting.
You were translating for your father.
And when he cried, you didn’t.
You just held his hand and said 'We’ll be okay, Daddy.'"
Damien’s voice cracked.
"In a room full of men shouting about money,
you were the only calm thing.
And I thought... if I marry calm,
maybe some of it will rub off on me."
Zara’s eyes filled.
"So you bought calm?"
"I bought you," he whispered.
"And I wasted 3 years being too stupid to see
that you were giving it to me for free."
*HISTORY LESSON #1: THE WIFE’S TRUTH*
Zara wiped her eyes.
"Can I tell you my truth now?"
Damien nodded.
"I didn’t marry you to save my father’s company.
Not really."
Damien frowned.
"I married you because for the first time,
someone needed me.
At home I was 'the girl who sends money.'
With you... I was 'the wife.'
Even if you didn’t want me,
I had a job. A purpose."
She smiled sadly.
"So we both used each other, huh?"
Damien shook his head.
"No. You served. I took.
That’s not the same thing."
*SWEET: THE OFFER*
Damien got on one knee.
Zara gasped.
"Damien, what are you—"
"No ring. No contract," he said fast.
"Just a question."
He looked up at her.
"Zara Adebayo.
Will you have dinner with me again tomorrow?
And breakfast the day after?
And... will you let me court you?
Properly. Like you deserve."
Zara stared at him.
The man who signed papers without looking.
Now on his knees. Asking.
She pulled him up.
"Yes. To dinner.
Yes. To breakfast.
And yes... you can court me."
She paused.
"But Damien? No money. No gifts.
Just you. Showing up."
"Deal," he said. Like it was the best deal of his life.
*THE TWIST: HIS MOTHER CALLS*
His phone rang. *MOTHER*.
Damien answered on speaker.
"Son. The board says you’ve been distracted.
And Claire says you’re with that girl again."
Damien looked at Zara.
"That 'girl' is Zara.
And I’m not distracted, Mother.
I’m finally focused."
Silence.
"Damien Hartley, you do not—"
"I do," he cut her off. Voice steady.
"I’m in love with my wife.
And I’m going to spend the rest of my life
earning her back."
He hung up.
Zara was crying now.
"Did you just...?"
"Yes," Damien said.
"I chose you. Out loud."
*END OF CHAPTER 4*
*1 WEEK LATER*
The tabloids:
*"ICE KING THAWS: HARTLEY SPOTTED BUYING GROCERIES IN PECKHAM"*
*"BILLIONAIRE LEARNS TO COOK FOR NURSE EX-WIFE"*
Damien didn’t care.
He was too busy.
Learning to make jollof on YouTube.
Driving Zara to night shifts.
Waiting in the hospital parking lot with tea.
One night Zara came out. Exhausted.
He was asleep in the car.
With a blanket and a note:
_"You save people. Let me save you a seat. Love, D."_
Zara got in. Drove them home.
Both of them.
