Chapter 9:
Julia's hands trembled as she dialed Vanessa's number, her mind racing with worst-case scenarios. Vanessa answered on the third ring, her voice cheerful. "Hey, girl! I'm not on duty today, just enjoying a relaxing day off. What's up?"
Julia took a deep breath, trying to calm her nerves. "Vanessa, it's about the boss... he's back."
Vanessa's tone turned serious. "What? That's unexpected! What's going on?"
"He wants to see me in his office," Julia said, her voice barely above a whisper. "Manager Dan said he might fire me."
Vanessa's laughter was reassuring. "Our handsome boss is around, and you're worried about being fired? Don't be scared, Julia! He can't just fire you without any reason. You've been doing a great job, and you know it. Go and meet him, and see what he has to say. Let me know everything, okay?"
Julia felt a small sense of relief wash over her. Vanessa was right; she had done nothing wrong. She took a deep breath, squared her shoulders, and headed towards the office, ready to face whatever lay ahead.
Julia's heart raced as she entered Alex's office, their eyes locking in a flash of recognition. "You!" she exclaimed, her finger pointing accusingly.
Alex's reply was calm and gentle. "Yes, me." He apologized again for bumping into her, and Julia's expression softened. "It's fine, I'm not angry anymore," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Alex's curiosity was piqued, and he asked the question that had been on his mind. "I heard you're staying here with your daughter... in the cafe?" His tone was kind and non-judgmental, but Julia's eyes fluttered closed, her face pale.
