Chapter 13
As they stepped out of the car, Lucas's eyes narrowed, his face scrunched in distaste. "Who are they?" he asked gruffly, clearly unhappy about the presence of Julia and Diamond.
Alex's expression turned stern. "Lucas, this is Julia and her daughter Diamond. They'll be staying with us for a while."
Lucas crossed his arms, his eyes fixed on Diamond. "I don't want them here," he said bluntly.
Diamond's eyes widened, her face falling. Julia put a reassuring arm around her shoulders. "It's okay, sweetie. We'll be fine."
Alex's voice was firm. "Lucas, I expect you to be respectful and kind to our guests."
Lucas scowled but said nothing, his disapproval palpable. The tension was evident as they stood in the driveway, the atmosphere strained.
Diamond's eyes sparkled with excitement as she approached Lucas, her little hand extended. "Hi, Lucas! I'm Diamond! We're gonna be friends!" she said, her voice full of enthusiasm.
But Lucas's scowl deepened, and he flung her hand away. "I don't want to be friends with you!" he snapped, his voice harsh.
Diamond's face crumpled, and she stumbled backward, her eyes welling up with tears. She fell to the ground, her small body shaking with sobs.
Alex rushed to her side, his face stern. "Lucas, apologize to Diamond right now!" he demanded.
But Lucas refused, his eyes flashing with defiance. "No! I don't have to!" he shouted, stomping his foot.
With a sob, Lucas rushed into his room, slamming the door behind him. Alex scooped up Diamond, cradling her in his arms as she continued to cry.
"It's okay, sweetie. You're safe now," Alex whispered, his eyes blazing with anger at Lucas's behavior.
