The Letter
The morning after Zayyan’s arrival, Zahra sat in the kitchen, staring at the letter that had arrived from Zahrania. The royal seal was unmistakable, and the weight of the envelope felt too heavy for her to hold.
Zayyan had insisted on staying the night, though Zahra had avoided any conversation beyond polite small talk. She knew this moment was coming, but she wasn’t prepared. Not for this.
Ayaan was playing outside, laughing as he kicked a soccer ball around in the yard. His innocent joy was a stark contrast to the storm that was about to hit their lives.
Zahra broke the seal and opened the letter.
The Royal Offer
To: Zahra Bakari
From: The Royal Court of Zahrania
We, the royal family of Zahrania, hereby acknowledge the presence of His Royal Highness, Prince Zayyan Al-Hazari’s legitimate son, Ayaan Bakari. It is with great honor and respect that we invite the young prince to join his rightful place in the kingdom.
In accordance with Zahrania’s royal law, Ayaan must undergo an official recognition ceremony, after which he will assume his place in the line of succession to the throne.
Failure to comply will result in the immediate termination of his royal status, and any ties to Zahrania will be severed.
Please respond within seven days to confirm your decision.
We await your reply.
Royal Court of Zahrania
Zahra’s hands trembled as she read the letter. The official tone of it struck her like a blow to the chest. She had known this day would come, but she wasn’t ready for it. Not like this.
She placed the letter down on the table and wiped her eyes. Her thoughts were a mess. What was best for Ayaan? How could she protect him from a world that demanded more from him than he could ever offer?
The Confrontation
That evening, after dinner, Zayyan stood by the window looking out at the night sky. Zahra watched him quietly from the doorway, still unsure of what to say. The silence between them was becoming too thick to ignore.
“Ayaan doesn’t belong in Zahrania,” Zahra finally said, breaking the silence. “He doesn’t belong in that world.”
Zayyan turned slowly, his expression unreadable. “You don’t know that for sure.”
“I do.” Zahra’s voice was firm. “I’ve worked hard to build a life for him here. A life that’s simple. Free. He doesn’t need royal obligations or the weight of a crown.”
“You’re not giving him a choice, Zahra,” Zayyan said, his voice softer now. “This is his birthright. He deserves to know who he is. To know his family.”
“You never gave him a chance,” she shot back. “You disappeared. Left us without a word, and now, you want him to step into your world like nothing happened?”
Zayyan flinched, his guilt written across his face. “I didn’t want to leave. I didn’t know about Ayaan until it was too late.”
Zahra took a deep breath. “I did everything for him, Zayyan. And now you’re telling me I have to send him away to be a prince in a kingdom that won’t ever accept him?”
Zayyan walked closer to her, his eyes pleading. “I’m not asking you to send him away. I’m asking you to let him choose.”
The Bloodline Test
The next morning, a royal messenger arrived with another letter. This time, it was an official royal order requiring Ayaan to undergo a bloodline test to confirm his royal heritage. The test, according to the letter, would take place at the Zahrania Embassy in Dar es Salaam, just a few hours away.
Zahra read the letter aloud, her voice trembling. “This... this is too much. They want to test him like an animal to prove his worth.”
Zayyan stood beside her, his expression one of silent frustration. “It’s the law, Zahra. If we don’t comply, they’ll strip Ayaan of his claim to the throne.”
Zahra shook her head. “I don’t care about the throne. I care about my son. And I won’t let them turn him into something he’s not.”
Ayaan came running in at that moment, a wide grin on his face. “What’s going on, Mommy?”
Zahra knelt down to his level, her voice soft and gentle. “Ayaan, there’s something important we need to talk about.”
Zayyan watched the exchange, his heart heavy. He wanted to protect them both, but the weight of his kingdom’s laws was a force he couldn’t easily escape.
The Decision
The days passed in a blur of arguments and sleepless nights. Zahra and Zayyan were at odds over everything what was best for Ayaan, what the future held, and what they owed to the kingdom.
But amidst it all, Zahra knew one thing for certain: she would fight for her son’s happiness, no matter what the cost.
One evening, as they sat together in silence, Zahra finally spoke.
“I’ll let him take the test,” she said quietly. “But I want it to be his choice. He deserves the right to know who he is. But whatever happens, he stays with me. He stays with us.”
Zayyan looked at her, surprised by her concession. “You’re doing this for him, not for me.”
Zahra nodded. “I’m doing this for Ayaan. He deserves to make his own path, not be forced into a life he doesn’t want.”
