Chapter Four: Unfinished Promises

1025 Words
The envelope felt heavier than it looked. Elle stood frozen in the middle of the café, staring at the words written across its front. **For Elle.** The handwriting was unmistakable. It belonged to Asher. Yet the envelope looked old, its edges worn and slightly faded, as if it had spent years hidden away. Before she could reach for it again, Noah gently took her arm. "Let's go home." Elle didn't move. Her eyes remained fixed on the envelope lying on the table between her and Asher. "No," she whispered. "I'm not leaving until someone tells me the truth." The café had emptied. Only a few employees remained behind the counter, pretending not to listen. Asher slowly picked up the envelope. "I wasn't planning to give this to you like this." "Then when?" Elle asked, her voice shaking. "After another three years?" He lowered his gaze. "I never stopped looking for the right time." "The right time?" she repeated bitterly. "Do you know how many nights I spent wondering why you disappeared? Do you know how many times I blamed myself before I finally blamed you?" Asher didn't answer. His silence hurt more than any excuse. Noah stepped between them. "Elle, enough." She looked at her brother. "No." Tears filled her eyes. "I'm tired of people deciding what's best for me." For a long moment, no one spoke. Then Asher carefully placed the envelope into her hands. "You deserve to read it." --- The walk home felt longer than usual. The envelope remained untouched inside her bag. She wanted to open it. She also feared what she might find. By the time she reached her apartment, the sky had turned orange with the setting sun. She locked the door behind her and sat on the edge of her bed. Her room was quiet except for the ticking clock on the wall. Slowly... She broke the seal. Inside was a single folded letter. The paper had yellowed with age. At the top was a date. **Three years ago.** Her hands trembled. She began to read. --- **Dear Elle,** If you're reading this, it means I finally found the courage to let you know the truth. By now, everyone probably hates me. Maybe you do too. If that's what helps you heal, then I'll accept it. But before you decide who I am... I need you to know one thing. I never left because I stopped loving you. I left because staying would have put you in even greater danger. Every part of me wanted to stay beside your hospital bed. I wanted to be there when you opened your eyes. I wanted to tell you everything. But I made a promise. A promise I couldn't break. One day, when you're ready, I'll explain everything. Until then... Please keep dreaming. Even if I'm no longer part of those dreams. Because you deserve every tomorrow this world has to offer. —Asher --- A tear landed on the page. Then another. Elle quickly wiped her face. "No..." She read the letter again. And again. There wasn't a single explanation. No names. No details. Only more questions. She looked inside the envelope once more. Something else was hidden beneath the letter. A small silver key. Attached to it was a tiny paper tag. **Westbridge Central Station** **Locker 214** Elle frowned. "What is this?" Just then, her phone vibrated. It was a message from an unknown number. **Don't go to the station alone.** Her heart skipped. Another message arrived seconds later. **Someone is watching you.** She immediately stood and rushed to the window. Outside, people walked along the street as usual. Parents held their children's hands. Students laughed on their way home. Everything seemed normal. Until... Across the street... A man wearing a black hoodie stood beside a parked motorcycle. He wasn't looking at the road. He was looking directly at her apartment. The moment their eyes met... He pulled out his phone. Then climbed onto the motorcycle and disappeared into traffic. Elle stepped away from the window, her breathing uneven. Who was he? How did he know about the letter? And why had Asher hidden a key inside the envelope? --- The following morning, Elle arrived at the university earlier than usual. She hoped the familiar routine would quiet the storm inside her mind. Instead, she found Asher sitting alone in the rooftop garden, a rolled blueprint resting beside him. For a moment, she considered walking away. But the letter in her bag pulled her forward. "Asher." He looked up, surprised. "I read it." He nodded quietly. "I thought you would." Elle held up the small silver key. "What does this open?" A flicker of emotion crossed his face. "Something we promised we'd never lose." "What does that mean?" He stood, taking a slow step toward her. "Do you remember the train station?" Elle searched her memories. There was only a faint image. A platform. The sound of a departing train. Two teenagers making promises they believed would last forever. "We buried a time capsule," Asher said softly. Her eyes widened. "We were supposed to open it after graduation." A painful smile appeared on his face. "But graduation never happened the way we planned." Before Elle could respond, the chapel bell on campus rang loudly. Students began filling the courtyard below. Asher glanced toward the stairs. "We should go." "Wait." He stopped. "I have one more question." He turned back. She looked into his eyes. "Did you ever stop loving me?" For the first time in three years, the walls around Asher cracked. His voice was barely a whisper. "Not for a single day." Before Elle could answer... A loud crash echoed from the parking lot below. Students screamed. Both of them rushed to the railing. A black motorcycle lay on its side. The rider had vanished. But scattered across the pavement were dozens of photographs. The wind carried one onto the rooftop. Elle picked it up. It was a picture of her. Taken only yesterday. Someone wasn't just watching her anymore. Someone was following her. **End of Chapter Four** *To be continued in Chapter Five: **The Letter Never Sent***
