We'd barely hung out since she got her new boyfriend, and I missed her. A lot. As I lay on my bed thinking, the soft knock on the door startled me—I hadn’t realized I’d drifted off. “Hey,” Dad peeked in. “Just wanted to let you know your mom and I are heading out for our sweetheart weekend trip. Making up for spoiling you too much,” he added with a playful wink. “Enjoy yourselves,” I said, walking over for a hug. I tried to slyly check his pockets for extra cash, but he was onto me. “Be good, kid. Look out for Henry,” he said before heading off to help Mom pack. As soon as the door clicked shut, my phone rang. It was London, confirming our plans. Relief washed over me. I hadn’t spent time with her like this in a while, and I missed my best friend like crazy. Between classes, new relationships, and her unpredictable schedule, we barely had time to breathe, let alone hang out. Also—just in case you haven’t caught on—I’m very much single. And very much not winning in the dating department. London says it’s because I don’t know what I’m looking for, but come on—shouldn’t love be easy to recognize when you’ve grown up with parents like mine? Apparently not.
