BOUND BY CHOICE Chapter Four: The Queen's Secret (Part One) The palace felt different. Not because its walls had changed... But because silence carried something heavier than before. The distant howls from the desert had not stopped since midnight. Every servant walked faster. Every guard held his weapon a little tighter. Every shadow seemed alive. Karim noticed all of it. As he walked through the eastern corridor, two soldiers immediately stepped aside and bowed. "Good morning, Sir Karim." He smiled awkwardly. "I've told everyone already..." "I'm not a sir." One of them answered politely. "Her Majesty insists." Karim sighed. "I wish she wouldn't." The guards exchanged amused glances but remained silent. --- Elsewhere... Inside the council chamber... Layla stood before twelve elders. The atmosphere was tense. One elderly Lycan struck his staff against the marble floor. "You have endangered the entire kingdom." Another added coldly, "A human inside the royal palace." "A human you refuse to surrender." Layla's expression never changed. "He is under my protection." An older woman narrowed her eyes. "Your protection..." "...or your affection?" Silence. No one breathed. Finally... Layla answered. "Both." The room erupted. Several council members stood at once. "This is madness!" "You shame the throne!" "You shame your parents' legacy!" Layla raised one hand. Immediately... Silence returned. "I have listened." "Now you will listen." Her voice remained calm. Yet every word carried authority. "I have ruled this kingdom for centuries." "I defended these lands." "I buried friends." "I buried family." "I buried kings." "And never once..." "...did any of you question my judgment." She slowly looked around the chamber. "But today..." "You question me because I showed compassion." No one answered. --- Outside... Faris waited beside the enormous wooden doors. He heard every raised voice. Every accusation. Every insult. Yet he knew... Layla would never bend. Not because she was stubborn. Because once she decided something... Nothing could change her mind. Except... Perhaps... One person. --- Karim spent the morning inside the palace library. Books surrounded him from every direction. Ancient history. Poetry. Religion. Medicine. Astronomy. Some books looked hundreds of years old. Others... Far older. He carefully opened one. Its pages had begun turning yellow. Inside... A date caught his attention. 1478. He blinked. "No way..." He quickly grabbed another. 1692. Another. 1811. Another. 1919. His heart raced. Every book contained notes written in the same handwriting. Layla's handwriting. She hadn't collected history. She had lived it. --- Soft footsteps echoed behind him. "You finally noticed." Karim turned. Layla stood near the doorway. He looked back at the books. "You wrote these?" She nodded. "Some." "You were alive..." "...during all of this?" "Yes." Karim stared at her. For several long moments... He couldn't speak. --- Finally... He whispered, "Who are you?" Layla didn't answer immediately. Instead... She slowly walked toward one of the tallest windows. Sunlight covered half her face. The other half remained hidden in shadow. "I think..." "...it's time you knew." --- She led him through corridors he had never seen before. Down long staircases. Past locked iron gates. Through narrow stone tunnels beneath the palace. The air became colder. The walls older. Finally... They reached an enormous circular chamber. Ancient symbols covered every stone. Blue flames burned without smoke. Karim looked around in amazement. "What is this place?" Layla answered quietly. "The place where every ruler before me accepted the crown." He slowly approached the center. There... A massive silver emblem had been carved into the floor. It resembled... A wolf beneath a full moon. --- Karim frowned. "A wolf?" Layla nodded. "Yes." He looked back at her. "I don't understand." "You will." She closed her eyes. Then... She removed the royal cloak from her shoulders. The chamber became silent. Almost unnaturally silent. Even the wind had disappeared. --- "Karim." Her voice sounded softer than ever. "I have hidden the truth from you..." "...because I feared what would happen after you learned it." He remained still. "I deserve the truth." "You do." She nodded. Then... She whispered, "I am not human." His heartbeat quickened. "I belong to the oldest Lycan bloodline in Egypt." "I was born over three hundred years ago." "I am the Queen..." "...of the Lycans." --- Karim laughed. Not because it was funny. Because it sounded impossible. "Werewolves?" Layla didn't answer. Instead... She stepped toward the ancient symbol. Blue light slowly surrounded her feet. The chamber trembled. A cold wind circled around them. Karim instinctively stepped backward. "What..." "...what is happening?" --- Layla looked directly into his eyes. "I need you to promise me something." "What?" "No matter what you see..." "Do not run." His voice trembled. "I..." "I promise." She closed her eyes. Then... The blue light became brighter. Much brighter. The air itself seemed to shake. A powerful energy filled every corner of the chamber. Karim felt goosebumps across his arms. His breathing became uneven. He couldn't look away. Something impossible... Was about to happen. --- End of Chapter Four (Part One) --- 🌙 Thank You!
