BOUND BY CHOICE Chapter Three: Behind Closed Doors (Part One) Morning arrived quietly over the ancient palace. Golden sunlight filtered through the towering windows, casting long beams across polished marble floors that had witnessed centuries of history. Outside, birds sang among the olive trees as though nothing in the world had changed. Inside... Everything had. Karim awoke slowly. For a brief moment, he expected to hear his younger brothers arguing outside his bedroom, his mother preparing breakfast, and his father's familiar voice greeting the new day. Instead... Silence. His eyes opened. The carved ceiling above him. The unfamiliar room. The memories returned all at once. Layla. The palace. The glowing eyes. The truth. He sat upright, pressing both hands against his face. "This wasn't a dream..." A quiet sigh escaped his lips. "No..." "It was real." A soft knock echoed through the room. Karim immediately became alert. "Come in." The massive wooden door opened slowly. A young servant entered, carrying a silver tray filled with warm bread, fresh cheese, dates, honey, and tea. She bowed respectfully. "Good morning, Sir Karim." Karim looked confused. "Sir?" The young woman smiled politely. "Those were Her Majesty's instructions." She carefully placed the tray on the table near the window. "Breakfast has been prepared." Karim folded his arms. "I'm not hungry." The servant hesitated. "Her Majesty also expected you might say that." Karim raised an eyebrow. "And?" "She asked me to remind you that your family would never forgive you if you neglected your health." Karim froze. Those words struck him unexpectedly. His family... Even here... Layla remembered them. The servant quietly excused herself, leaving the room once again. Karim remained motionless. After several moments... He finally walked toward the table. Not because he wanted to eat. But because hearing someone mention his family made refusing impossible. He whispered softly, "Allah... protect them." Far across the palace... Layla stood alone on a wide stone balcony overlooking the endless desert. The morning breeze carried the scent of sand and blooming jasmine. Behind her, footsteps approached. "My Queen." Layla turned. It was Faris. His expression remained calm, though concern lingered in his eyes. "You haven't rested." "I wasn't able to." "You've spent the entire night awake." She looked toward the distant horizon. "So has he." Faris understood immediately. "He refused dinner." "He accepted breakfast." A faint smile appeared on Layla's face. "I'm relieved." Faris watched her carefully. "You truly care for him." Layla answered without hesitation. "More than I should." Silence settled between them. Finally, Faris spoke again. "The council demands another meeting." "I expected as much." "They're growing impatient." "They believe you've endangered our people." Layla nodded slowly. "Perhaps..." "I have." After breakfast... Karim began exploring the room more carefully. Everything around him reflected remarkable craftsmanship. Ancient books lined the shelves. Maps covered one wall. A beautifully carved wooden desk stood near the fireplace. His eyes stopped on something unexpected. A small bookshelf. Filled with books about Egypt. History. Architecture. Religion. Even carpentry. Karim slowly reached for one of them. "The Art of Traditional Egyptian Woodworking." His eyes widened. "This..." "This is exactly what I do." He turned several pages. Detailed sketches. Techniques passed down for generations. Rare designs he had never seen before. Someone had chosen these books carefully. Very carefully. A quiet voice came from behind him. "I hoped you would like them." Karim turned immediately. Layla stood near the doorway. She hadn't entered. She remained respectfully outside. As though asking permission without saying a word. Neither of them spoke. Finally... Karim broke the silence. "You bought these for me?" Layla nodded. "I noticed your interest while watching you work." His expression hardened slightly. "You mean while spying on me." Pain flashed across her face. "...Yes." She didn't deny it. "I suppose that's the honest way to describe it." Karim looked back toward the bookshelf. "I should hate you." "I know." "I've tried." "I know." He sighed quietly. "But then you do things like this..." He gently touched one of the books. "...and I don't know what to think anymore." Layla lowered her eyes. "You don't have to forgive me." "I'm not asking for forgiveness." "I'm only hoping..." She hesitated. "...that one day you'll understand." Karim looked directly at her. "Understanding isn't the same as agreeing." A faint smile crossed Layla's lips. "I know." For the first time... Their conversation ended... Without anger. --- Layla remained standing by the doorway. She had no intention of forcing another conversation. If Karim wished to end it there... She would respect his decision. Just as she was about to leave... Karim spoke. "Wait." She stopped. Slowly, she turned back toward him. "You said you've lived for three hundred and forty years." "I have." "Then you've seen almost everything." "Not everything." "What haven't you seen?" For the first time that day... Layla smiled. "A life that truly belonged to me." Karim frowned. "I don't understand." She stepped inside the room, but kept a respectful distance. "I've ruled kingdoms." "I've ended wars." "I've signed treaties." "I've watched history unfold with my own eyes." She looked toward the tall window. "But every decision I made..." "...was for everyone else." "Never for myself." Karim remained silent. Layla continued. "I never chose my crown." "I inherited it." "I never chose immortality." "It was given to me." "I never chose loneliness." "It simply became part of my existence." Her voice grew quieter. "And when I finally chose something..." "...I chose the wrong way." Karim knew exactly what she meant. His k********g. He crossed his arms. "You could have spoken to me." "I know." "You could have trusted me." "I know." "You could have let me decide." "I know." Every answer carried the same quiet regret. For several moments... Neither of them spoke. --- Later that afternoon... One of the palace guards escorted Karim into the royal gardens. Unlike before... No one walked beside him. No one held his arm. The guards simply watched from a respectful distance. Karim noticed. "They're giving me space." The guard nodded. "Her Majesty's orders." "What if I try to escape?" The guard looked toward the massive stone walls surrounding the palace. "You may try." Karim followed his gaze. The walls stretched higher than the tallest palm trees. Beyond them... Only endless desert. Escape wasn't impossible. But surviving it... Was another matter entirely. He sighed. "So even my freedom has limits." The guard answered honestly. "For now." --- As Karim wandered through the gardens, he found a quiet fountain hidden beneath ancient fig trees. Someone was already there. Layla. She sat alone on a marble bench with an open Qur'an resting in her hands. She hadn't noticed him. Her lips moved silently as she read. Karim stopped walking. He had expected to see a queen. A ruler. Instead... He saw a woman quietly reciting the words of Allah. When she finished reading, she gently closed the Qur'an and whispered, "Alhamdulillah." Only then did she notice him. Their eyes met. Neither of them spoke. Karim finally broke the silence. "You read the Qur'an every day?" Layla nodded. "Since I was a child." "For three hundred and forty years?" A gentle smile appeared on her face. "Some verses never stop teaching us." Karim slowly approached. "My mother always says..." "...the Qur'an heals hearts." Layla looked down at the holy book in her hands. "Your mother is right." A soft breeze carried the scent of jasmine through the garden. For a brief moment... Everything felt peaceful. No prison. No queen. No captive. Just two believers sharing a quiet afternoon. --- As sunset painted the sky in shades of gold and crimson... Karim stood alone beneath one of the palace balconies. His thoughts refused to settle. Everything about Layla contradicted itself. She had kidn*pped him. Yet she treated him with kindness. She had stolen his freedom. Yet she respected his dignity. She terrified him. Yet somehow... She also pitied him. "No..." He whispered to himself. "I can't forget what she did." "But..." He looked toward the palace. "...why does she seem so alone?" High above him... Layla watched from the balcony. She had heard nothing. Yet somehow... She felt the same question echo inside her own heart. --- Far beyond the palace walls... Deep within the Western Desert... Another gathering had begun. Dozens of Lycan warriors stood beneath the rising moon. At their center stood a tall warrior wearing black armor scarred by countless battles. His golden eyes burned with anger. "The Queen has broken our oldest law." Silence spread across the gathering. Another warrior stepped forward. "What are your orders?" The leader slowly unsheathed his sword. "If Layla refuses to surrender the human..." "...then we will march on the palace." The moon disappeared behind dark clouds. And for the first time in centuries... The Kingdom of the Lycans stood on the edge of civil war. --- End of Chapter Three (Part One) --- 🌙 Thank You! Thank you so much for reading!
