Edmund was in the garden.
Not pacing. Not standing at a window.
Actually sitting. In a chair. In the morning light with a cup of coffee going cold beside him and his eyes on the mountain and the specific stillness of a man who had been thinking for a very long time and had arrived somewhere he was not sure he wanted to be.
Mara stopped in the doorway.
She looked at him.
He felt her looking.
He turned.
He read her face in one second.
"You know," he said quietly.
"Yes," she said.
He looked at his coffee.
"Sit down," he said.
They sat across from him.
All three of them.
The morning light warm on the garden.
