Brelles’ POV
The girls were hanging all over my brothers and Jace. Winston, being like my mom, could already find his mate. He says he has known it since he was a kid. He doesn’t tell us who it is though. He doesn’t date and most girls in the pack know this. He says he doesn’t claim her because he doesn’t think it's fair. She won’t feel it till she is eighteen. He wants her to enjoy her high school life without the pressures of being mated to an alpha.
My mom thinks he’s being Nobel. Dad says he’s stupid. Dad says he knew mom was his mate since he first shifted. Dad thinks this poor girl feels their bond, but Winston just won’t do anything about it. He thinks the girl may start to feel like she isn’t good enough. Mercy and I have bets on who it is. She thinks it’s Jace’s sister, Carolyn. She is four years younger than us, which is why he’s keeping it under his hat for now. My money is for Aunt Meghan’s daughter. She is two years younger than us. She can shift into a coyote like her mom. Growing up, Winston, Clover and I have always kind of grouped together. Us non-wolf shifters must stick together. I can shift into both a wolf and a fox, so they say I don't know what it's like to be a true non-wolf shifter. They have a real special bond. She’s a freshman this year, so we will be seeing more of her around school.
Speak of the devil. Clover makes her way over to the boys and me. She has long brown hair. Its pin straight, almost touching her waist. She has bright blue eyes like her mom and dad and freckles that cover most of her face, adding to her natural beauty. Her skin is pale, almost doll-like and she walks like she is on a runway and not the track of our high school. Her long legs on full display in her white shorts and her toned abs peaking out from her baby blue crop top. She waves at Mercy as she goes by. They are on the school’s dance team together. I feel like I am on the beach every time she comes around. Her scent is so strong, just sand and surf.
Winston walks away from the desperate girls and wraps his arm around Clover and messes her hair. She giggles and elbows him in the ribs, and he mocks the pain. Jace looks Clover up and down and a small rumble leaves my chest. It is quiet but JJ, standing closest to me, catches it. Arching a brow at me, thrown off by the anger. I roll my shoulders trying to get a grip on myself. Chandler showing up really has me on edge. Mercy hops the fence and comes to join us, growling at the girls hanging all over the boys. They bowed their heads and walked away.
“Really, MJ, we had a shot here.” Jace said with a frown.
“Oh, please, as if you don’t have ten more lined up behind them. Plus, aren’t you going to see them at the bonfire tonight?” Mercy waved him off.
“Oh, and how would you know what I do at the bonfire? You are probably going to stay home with a book.” He said, wiggling his eyebrows at her. He was such a flirt, it gagged me.
Jace looked like your typical bad boy. His dark brown hair and chocolate eyes make him look like David Beckham. He almost always has a five o’clock shadow. He always smells so pure like when you walk out of your house in the middle of the night after a fresh layer of snow has covered the ground and the world is asleep. He plays lacrosse. My mom is the one who taught him the sport when he was younger. My aunt Cookie, his mom, was never big into sports and Uncle Ed wanted him to play football, but he was too physical as a quarterback, so mom showed him lacrosse and he’s been hooked ever since. Girl’s drool over him. He had a thing for MJ when we were younger. She told him she'd stick with the men in her books. He changed after that. He became harder, cold even. He acts like nothing matters.
“At least my book never lets me down,” She snapped.
“It was one time, MJ! Get over it!” Jace rounded on her. MJ stepped back looking like she’d been slapped. I felt the pain roll off her. So did my brothers. We all looked at each other. “MJ, f**k. I’m sorry.” He ran his hand through his hair, stepping towards her.
“Don’t worry, it's fine. Forget it. Enjoy the bonfire.” She said, waving at us before walking away.
Clover looked at me and jerked her head toward Mercy. I nodded as she slipped out of Winston's hold and we took off toward MJ. The boys yelled after us, but we just flipped them off. Mercy’s short wavy hair bounced as she walked down the hill. She was fast when she was pissed. We raced down the hill to the parting lot. We caught her just in time, before she jumped on her motorcycle.
“MJ! Yo, wait up you, OK?” I asked. She straddled her green Kawasaki ninja. The bike was a gift from Uncle Ben. She loved taking rides on the back of his bike growing up. Uncle Ben never had any girls and MJ is his goddaughter, so they have always been close.
“Yeah, Bree I’m good. Good game today. I’ll see you at home.” She said as she zipped up her jacket over her crop top. her body fully covered now to protect her skin while she was on the bike.
“Why don’t we all get a pizza and hang out? Can we go to the bonfire together? Chandler will probably be there so we could throw marshmallows at his head.” I joked, hoping she would loosen up.
“Yeah, come on, it will be just a girl’s night. Boys are stupid anyway.” Clover egged her on.
“You guys aren’t going to let me say no are you,” MJ said, putting her green helmet on.
“Nope.” Clover giggled, tapping her long baby blue fingernails together like a mad man.
“Fine whatever. I will see you guys down at the house.” she said as her bike roared to life, taking off out of the school.
“Can I ride with you?” Clover asked.
“Sure. I’m parked over by the locker room.” I told her as we made our way to my pickup truck. As we went around the building, Chandler looked up from his phone. Was he waiting for me? I dug the keys out of my bag and unlocked the doors. Tossing clover, the keys to give me a minute. I walk toward the man I am somehow going to spend the rest of my life with one day and my stomach does a slow roll.
He pushed himself off the wall without using his arms. Reminding me of just how much muscle there is under that black t-shirt. Standing just outside of his personal space, I am engulfed by his shadow. Making the hair on the back of my neck stand up. He looks down at me, his stormy eyes holding me in place. He sticks his hands in his pockets.
“You going to the bonfire tonight?” He questions.
“Yeah, we are making it a girl’s night. Don’t worry, I’ll make sure to stay out of your way. Wouldn’t want you to have to focus on anyone but yourself.” I threw it in his face, trying to keep the hurt out of my voice.
“Well, maybe you don’t have to.” He stepped forward, circling my thin wrist in his large, callused hand. “I miss you Breezy”, he dipped his head to nuzzle my neck. My body wanted to give in. To mold my body to his, it would be so easy, it would be so normal.
“What are we doing, Chandler? I’m tired of this. Either you want to run from the mate bond, or you don’t. I can’t keep being a yoyo.” I whispered as his lips touched my neck. Knowing I was sweaty, I knew that if he’d kiss me, I’d taste the salt of my skin. For that one moment, I let the mate bond fill my body with heat. That is till the locker room door snaps me out of it.
“OK Chandler. Thanks for waiting babe.” Taylor says. Chandler spins around, blocking my small frame from her view. Wait? Did she just say babe? I felt my stomach drop. Like that feeling you get on a roller coaster. Only I wasn’t getting off this ride. He broke up with me to focus on himself. To figure out who he was without being tied to the next alpha. He throws his arm around her, blocking her view entirely from me. He bends down and brushes a light kiss on her lips. My head spins. “Oh, babe your salty. I thought we were going to eat?” she questions as they walk away from me.
“Sorry just had a quick snack.” he said, looking quickly back at me. His gray eyes met mine and I felt the tear roll down my cheek. I turn around to collect myself and go to my truck, but Jace is leaning against the front of it. I rub my face, not wanting to show weakness.
“I’m sure there is an explanation,” Jace said, walking towards me. He pulled me into a bear hug. Giving me a few seconds, I needed to collect myself.
“Yeah, I don’t know.” I said to his chest.
“Yeah well, I do, because there is no way once he’s had you, he’d let you go. Plus, you guys have forever to figure it out right.” He said, lifting my face to him and drying my tears. Jace isn’t as tall or as big as Chandler, but Jace was still taller than me and had the title of beta. He held my gaze, and I could feel the power struggle between us, but he didn’t drop his gaze.
“Thanks” I said, stepping back from him. “I’m sure you are right, but it doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt now. I’ll see you later, thanks for having my back. Beta always having the alphas back.” I said, jumping into the driver’s side of the cab and pulling out of the space.
“You good?” Clover questioned, not even looking up from her phone.
“I don’t want to talk about it.” I told her, pulling out on to the main road back to my house.
