CHAPTER 2 — TERMS OF WAR

1158 Words
Zara didn’t stop walking. Not when the boardroom doors shut behind her. Not when her assistant called her name. Not even when the elevator doors slid open. Only when they closed did she allow herself a breath. Sharp. Controlled. Her reflection stared back at her from the mirrored walls—perfectly composed, not a crack in sight. But inside? Everything was moving too fast. A forced merger wasn’t business. It was a message. And Zara Sterling had never been the type to ignore threats. By the time the elevator reached her floor, her expression was already back in place—cool, untouchable. “Cancel my meetings,” she said, stepping out. Her assistant blinked. “All of them?” Zara didn’t slow down. “Every single one. And find out who approved that merger. I want names, not guesses.” “Yes, ma’am.” Zara pushed open the doors to her office and stepped inside, the silence wrapping around her like armor. She dropped the file onto her desk, staring at it for a moment. MERGER. The word felt like an insult. No one forced Zara Sterling into anything. No one. “You look like you’re planning a murder.” Zara went still Slowly, she turned. Adrian Cole stood near her window, hands in his pockets, completely at ease—as if breaking into her office was the most normal thing in the world. Her eyes hardened instantly. “How did you get in here?” He shrugged lightly. “Your security isn’t as perfect as you think.” “That wasn’t a compliment.” “I know.” Zara walked toward him, each step measured, controlled. “You have ten seconds to leave before I make it very uncomfortable for you to stay.” Adrian didn’t move. Didn’t even pretend to consider it. Instead, he reached into his jacket and placed a document on her desk. “Read.” Zara’s gaze flicked to it, then back to him. “You really don’t know when to stop.” “I know exactly when to start.” The tension between them sharpened. She picked up the document. Scanned it once. Then again. And this time, her grip tightened. “You want operational control?” she said slowly, her voice dangerously quiet. “Over my company?” “Our company,” Adrian corrected. Zara let out a soft laugh that held no humor. “You must be insane.” Adrian stepped closer, closing the distance like it meant nothing. “No,” he said calmly. “Just prepared.” Zara met his gaze, unflinching. “You think this merger gives you power?” she said. “You walked into my world, Adrian. Not the other way around.” “And yet,” he murmured, “you’re the one reacting.” That hit. Harder than it should have. Zara’s jaw tightened. “You want a fight,” she said. A small smile touched his lips. “I was hoping you’d notice.” A sharp knock cut through the moment. Zara didn’t look away from him. “Come in.” The door opened quickly, her assistant stepping in—visibly shaken. “Ma’am… there’s a situation.” Zara exhaled, already irritated. “This isn’t—” “It’s about the company.” That was enough. “Speak.” Her assistant hesitated, then held out a tablet. Zara took it. And everything else stopped. STERLING CORP UNDER FEDERAL INVESTIGATION FOR FINANCIAL FRAUD For a second—just a second—Zara didn’t move. Didn’t think. Didn’t breathe. Then reality snapped back into place. “This is false,” she said, her voice cold and precise. “It’s already trending,” her assistant said quickly. “Investors are reacting. The board is requesting an emergency session—” “Get out.” The assistant didn’t argue. She turned and left immediately. The door clicked shut. Silence filled the room again. But this time, it wasn’t calm. It was suffocating. Zara’s eyes slowly lifted from the screen. To Adrian. He hadn’t spoken,Hadn’t reacted. And that— That was wrong. “You knew,” she said. Not a question. Adrian tilted his head slightly. “That’s a dangerous accusation.” Zara stepped closer, the tablet still in her hand. “This merger. The timing. That document you just handed me.” Her voice dropped. “This isn’t a coincidence.” His gaze didn’t waver. “You think I orchestrated this?” “I think you benefit from it.” Silence stretched between them. Thick,Uncomfortable. Then Adrian took a step forward. “Zara,” he said quietly, “if I wanted to destroy you… I wouldn’t need a headline to do it.” The words landed heavily. Too steady,Too certain. And the worst part? She believed him. Her eyes narrowed slightly. “Then who?” For the first time, Adrian’s expression shifted—just barely. Interest. “Now that,” he said, “is the right question.” Zara turned away from him, pacing once, her mind already working through possibilities. Competitors,Old partners,Deals gone wrong. But this? This was precise,Personal. Whoever did this knew exactly where to hit. And when. Behind her, Adrian adjusted his cufflinks, his voice calm again. “Whoever is behind this didn’t just want your company,” he said. “They wanted control of the fallout.” Zara stopped walking. That thought settled deep. Because it made sense,Too much sense. “I don’t need your help,” she said without turning. “I didn’t offer it.” She glanced back at him. “You’re still here.” A pause. Then, quietly—“So are you.” Their eyes locked again. And this time, something shifted. Not softer,Not safer. Just… deeper,More dangerous. Adrian moved toward the door, stopping just before he reached it. “This isn’t just an attack,” he said. “It’s strategy.” Zara crossed her arms. “I’m aware.” “Good,” he replied, glancing back at her. “Because while you’re busy proving your innocence…” A slight pause,“They’re rewriting the rules.” The door opened. Then closed behind him. Zara stood still for a long moment. Then slowly, she looked back at the headline glowing on the screen. At her company’s name. At the accusation,At the attack. And something inside her settled. Cold,Focused,Unbreakable. “Big mistake,” she murmured. Not to Adrian,Not to anyone. Just to the silence. Across the city, in a dimly lit room, a figure watched the chaos unfold on multiple screens. Stock prices dropping. News spreading,Panic rising. Exactly as planned. A finger tapped lightly against the desk. Patient,Certain. Two names appeared on the largest screen: Zara Sterling,Adrian Cole. Side by side. The figure smiled. “Fight,” the voice whispered softly. “Distract each other.” A pause. Then, colder—,“By the time you see me coming…” The screen flickered. “…you’ll already be finished.”
