CHAPTER 6 — TOO CLOSE, TOO COMPLICATED

894 Words
Zara noticed it before she even reached the conference room. The change. Whispers. Side glances. Phones subtly angled toward her. The leak had spread. And now, everyone was watching. Waiting. Judging. Zara kept her expression steady as she walked in, Adrian beside her. Beside her. Not behind. Not ahead. Beside. That alone was enough to draw attention. “Smile,” Adrian murmured under his breath. Zara didn’t look at him. “I don’t smile under pressure.” “You should try it sometime.” She shot him a quick glance. “Focus.” He almost smiled. The meeting began. Investors spoke cautiously, their questions wrapped in concern disguised as professionalism. “Miss Sterling… can you confirm the authenticity of the leaked footage?” Zara didn’t hesitate. “No.” “And the investigation?” “Unsubstantiated.” “And the merger—” “Stable.” Her tone didn’t waver. But the room wasn’t convinced. Adrian stepped in smoothly, redirecting the conversation with quiet authority. “The merger is not the issue,” he said. “The issue is whoever is trying to destabilize both companies.” A murmur ran through the room. Zara noticed something then. The way some of the investors shifted their attention… not to Adrian’s words— But to him. Interest. Approval. Trust. And that… She didn’t like. Not at all. After the meeting ended, Zara stepped out first, her pace controlled but slightly faster than usual. Adrian followed. “Zara.” She didn’t stop immediately. But she did slow down. “Not now.” “That wasn’t a request.” She finally turned, her eyes sharp. “What do you want?” Adrian studied her for a second. “You’re distracted.” Zara let out a quiet, humorless laugh. “By what?” “By Daniel.” That name again. Zara’s expression hardened. “He’s irrelevant.” “Then why does he still get under your skin?” Silence. Zara stepped closer to him this time, lowering her voice. “Be careful.” “With what?” “With how much you think you understand me.” Adrian didn’t look away. “Then explain it.” That moment— The air shifted. Again. Closer. He was too close. Again. Zara’s gaze dropped briefly to his lips— And she froze. She hadn’t meant to. Hadn’t planned to. But the awareness was there now. Unavoidable. Adrian noticed. Of course he did. His voice dropped slightly. “You’re thinking too much.” Zara’s breath slowed. “I’m always thinking.” “Not right now.” For a second— Neither of them moved. Neither of them spoke. Just distance… that felt like it was shrinking. Zara took a small step back. Breaking it. Resetting it. “Stay focused,” she said quietly. Adrian exhaled lightly. “You first.” Before anything else could be said— A voice interrupted. “Zara.” They both turned. Daniel. Zara’s expression changed instantly. Not warmth. Not softness. But something… contained. “Daniel,” she said. He walked closer, his eyes briefly flicking to Adrian before returning to her. “You’ve been avoiding my calls.” “I’ve been busy.” “With him?” Daniel asked, nodding toward Adrian. Adrian’s jaw tightened slightly. Not obvious. But noticeable. Zara noticed it. And that made something in her pause. “That’s not your concern,” she replied. Daniel smiled faintly. “Still protective, I see.” There it was. The tension. Not just between Zara and Daniel— But now Adrian was in it too. Daniel stepped closer to Zara. Too close. Close enough to be familiar. “Some things don’t change,” he said softly. Zara didn’t move. But Adrian did. Just slightly. A subtle shift forward. Not aggressive. But enough. “Everything changes,” Zara replied. Her voice steady. Final. Daniel’s gaze lingered on her for a moment longer… then he stepped back. “Just be careful,” he said. “Careful of what?” she asked. Daniel’s eyes flicked briefly to Adrian. “Who you trust.” That landed. Harder than expected. Daniel turned and walked away. Leaving silence behind him. Zara stood still. Processing. Thinking. Feeling. Adrian broke the silence first. “You trust him.” It wasn’t a question. Zara didn’t answer immediately. “History doesn’t mean trust.” “Then what does it mean?” She looked at him. And for a moment— There was honesty there. Raw. Unfiltered. “It means I remember what people are capable of.” Adrian held her gaze. Something in his expression softened slightly. Not weak. Just… different. “And me?” he asked quietly. “What am I capable of?” Zara stepped closer again. Slow this time. Intentional. “I’m still figuring that out.” The distance between them disappeared again. Not forced. Not accidental this time. Just… inevitable. For a brief moment— Too brief— Neither of them moved Neither of them spoke. Just awareness. Breathing. Proximity. Zara’s phone buzzed. Sharp. Breaking it. She stepped back immediately, pulling herself out of the moment. “Work first,” she said. Adrian nodded slightly, though his eyes didn’t leave her. “Always.” But something had changed. Again. Not just tension. Not just partnership. Something deeper. Something neither of them had fully acknowledged yet— But both were starting to feel.
