Ruby POV I lean against the rough bark and try to steady my breathing, my chest tight with emotion. Hidden just behind the trees, I watch them. Cindy stands in front of him, eyes bright and shoulders tense. Tyler is a few steps back, jaw clenched, a bandage showing at his collar. The pit sits behind them. I’m not trying to eavesdrop. When Cindy asks him to walk with her, I stay put, thinking they’re too far away to hear. But they only move far enough that the rest of the pack can’t listen in. But I still hear Cindy’s voice crack. She sounds hurt and angry in a way I’ve never heard before. Then she says it. Everyone sees the way you look at her. I wait, pressed against the tree, expecting him to deny it. To say Cindy’s making it up. To say we’re just allies, just captain and soldier,
