Episode 4: The Ice That Whispers

903 Words
The first rays of dawn bathed Mooncrest Palace in pale gold. The castle courtyard buzzed with activity as warriors prepared for the journey north. Horses were saddled. Weapons were sharpened. Supplies were loaded onto wagons. The mission ahead was unlike any the kingdom had faced in over twenty years. ⸻ Princess Elara adjusted the leather straps of her travel cloak. She had trained for years with the Royal Guard, but today felt different. This wasn’t another lesson. This was war. Queen Lyra approached, carrying a small silver pendant shaped like a crescent moon. “I’ve been saving this for you.” She fastened it around Elara’s neck. “It belonged to your grandmother, Queen Seraphina.” Elara touched the pendant gently. “It feels warm.” Lyra smiled. “It has always protected the women of our family.” She placed a hand on her daughter’s cheek. “No matter what happens…” “Come home.” Elara hugged her tightly. “I promise.” ⸻ Nearby, Kael inspected the warriors. Damian stood confidently in polished armor, though his helmet was slightly crooked. Selene walked over and straightened it. “You’d think after all these years you’d know how to wear this.” Damian smirked. “I was waiting for you to fix it.” She rolled her eyes. “You haven’t changed.” “And you secretly like that.” She shook her head, trying not to smile. ⸻ Ryker stood alone near the palace gates. His wolf, a magnificent white beast with piercing blue eyes, watched the forest silently. Elara walked over. “You always stand by yourself.” Ryker didn’t look at her. “It’s easier.” “Easier than what?” He was quiet for a moment. “In the North…” “We learned not to grow attached.” “Everyone we loved eventually disappeared.” Elara’s expression softened. “I’m sorry.” Ryker finally looked at her. “You pity me.” “No.” She smiled gently. “I understand loneliness.” Ryker was surprised. “How could a princess know loneliness?” Elara glanced back at the cheering crowd. “They’ve always seen the future Queen.” “Very few have ever seen… just Elara.” For the first time, Ryker truly looked at her—not as the Moon’s Heir, but as a young woman carrying the weight of impossible expectations. ⸻ By midday, the expedition left the capital. Kael led the front. Damian and Selene guarded the rear. Ryker guided them toward the northern wilderness. As the hours passed, the warm forests slowly disappeared. The trees grew taller. The air became colder. Snow began to blanket the ground. The cheerful songs of birds faded into silence. Even the wind sounded… different. Almost like whispers. ⸻ As night approached, the group made camp beside a frozen lake. The surface of the ice reflected the moon perfectly. It was beautiful. Too beautiful. Ryker immediately stood. “No one goes near the lake.” Damian frowned. “It’s just ice.” Ryker’s voice became firm. “It isn’t.” Before anyone could ask why… One of the younger soldiers slowly walked toward the frozen water. His eyes were empty. He moved as though sleepwalking. Elara called out. “Marcus!” He didn’t respond. He stepped onto the ice. A soft voice echoed across the lake. “Come closer…” “We’ve been waiting…” The soldier smiled strangely. “They’re calling me.” Without thinking, Elara ran after him. “Stop!” Just as Marcus reached the center of the lake— The ice shattered. A long black hand shot out from beneath the frozen water and grabbed his ankle. Marcus screamed. Ryker reacted instantly. He leaped onto the ice, drawing a silver dagger. With one swift strike, he severed the shadowy hand. A horrifying shriek echoed beneath the lake. The black hand dissolved into smoke. Ryker grabbed Marcus and dragged him back to shore just as the ice closed again, leaving the lake perfectly still. As if nothing had happened. ⸻ Marcus collapsed, shaking uncontrollably. “What… was that?” Ryker stared at the frozen lake. “The Ice Whisperers.” “They don’t kill you.” “They convince you to surrender yourself.” Everyone stepped farther away from the water. Even Damian had lost his usual smile. ⸻ Later that night… Elara couldn’t sleep. She walked away from the campfire, staring at the stars. Ryker joined her. “You shouldn’t wander alone.” “I couldn’t sleep.” Neither spoke for several moments. Finally, Elara asked, “Are you afraid?” Ryker looked toward the distant Frozen Peaks. “Every day.” She looked at him, surprised. “You don’t act like it.” “My father once told me…” “‘Courage isn’t the absence of fear.’” “It’s choosing to walk forward despite it.” Elara smiled. “I think my father would’ve liked yours.” Ryker gave a small smile. “I think they would’ve argued over everything.” They both laughed quietly. Then… The laughter stopped. From deep within the forest came a low, echoing howl. It wasn’t the howl of a wolf. It was older. Colder. The snow around the camp instantly turned black. Ryker’s smile vanished. “He found us.” Far away, two crimson eyes opened between the trees. Watching. Waiting. 🌙❄️🐺
