Kaelen Thorne

1092 Words
The first thing Maya realized when she woke up was that she wasn’t dead. The second thing she realized was that the air no longer smelled of wet earth and copper blood. Instead, it was thick with the scent of expensive cologne, aged sandalwood, and something warm that made her heart skip a beat. She kept her eyes squeezed shut, her pulse performing a frantic rhythm against her ribs as the memories flooded back in sharp, painful stabs, the rain, the snapping of bones, the massive, midnight-black wolf with eyes like molten gold. And then the man... the predator who had touched her ankle and set her entire soul on fire. She felt the weight of a heavy, silk duvet over her body. Shifting slightly, she realized the rough fabric of her field clothes was gone, replaced by a soft, oversized t-shirt that definitely didn’t belong to her. A cold chill of panic washed over her. Someone had changed her clothes while she was unconscious. Someone had touched her while she was defenseless. "You're finally awake," a voice rumbled from the shadows. Maya’s eyes snapped open. She bolted upright, her head spinning so violently she had to grab the headboard to keep from falling. She was in a room that looked like it belonged in a five-star mountain fortress. Vaulted timber ceilings, dark mahogany walls, and a floor-to-ceiling window that overlooked a misty, jagged mountain range. It was beautiful, but it felt like a prison. Sitting in a leather armchair by the fireplace was him. He was dressed now in a simple charcoal sweater that did nothing to hide the sheer, terrifying bulk of his frame. He looked less like a monster and more like a king, but those eyes, the same gold she’d seen in the ravine were fixed on her with an intensity that made her skin prickle. "Where am I?" Maya’s voice was raspy, her throat feeling like it had been scraped with sandpaper. "Who are you?" The man stood up, his movement so fluid and silent it was unnerving. He walked toward the bed, stopping just out of arm’s reach. "You are in the Blackwood Estate. My name is Kaelen Thorne. And you, Maya Sterling, are lucky to be alive. Most people who trespass on my land don't get the luxury of a bed." Maya flinched at the sound of her own name. "How do you know who I am? And why am I here? I saw what you did in the woods. You... you’re a murderer. I saw you change. I saw what you really are." Kaelen’s jaw tightened, a muscle leaping in his cheek. A low, vibrating sound almost like a growl, started deep in his chest. "I am an Alpha. I protect my borders and my people. The man you saw was a rogue scout sent to spill blood in my territory. I did what was necessary to ensure the safety of my pack." "You turned into a monster," she said, her voice trembling as she pulled the duvet up to her chin. "That isn't necessary." Kaelen stepped closer, his presence suddenly suffocating. He leaned down, placing his hands on the mattress on either side of her hips, pinning her in place. Maya tried to shrink back, but there was nowhere to go. "I am not a human, Maya. I thought the sparks you felt when I touched you would have made that clear." He tilted his head, his gaze dropping to the pulse leaping frantically in her neck. "Do you feel it now? The way your blood hums when I’m near? The way your body recognizes mine?" Maya wanted to lie. She wanted to tell him she felt nothing but disgust. But as he leaned closer, that same addictive, searing heat from the ravine began to swirl in her stomach. Her body was betraying her, reaching out for the very predator she should be running from. It was a biological pull she couldn't explain, a magnetic force that made her want to lean into him rather than pull away. A sharp, demanding knock at the door broke the tension. A tall, blonde man with a serious expression stepped inside, his eyes scanning the room. "Alpha, we have a problem. The rogue’s scent wasn't alone. There were others at the perimeter. They’re tracking the girl’s scent to the border." Kaelen didn't look away from Maya. "Let them come, Elias. If a single one of them crosses the line, tear their throats out." "And the girl?" Elias asked, casting a wary, suspicious glance at Maya. "The pack is uneasy. She’s a human witness to a transformation. The law is clear, Kaelen. She cannot leave with our secrets." Kaelen finally stood up straight, his expression turning cold and lethal. He turned to his Beta, his voice booming with power. "She isn't just a witness, Elias. She is my mate. The Moon Goddess has chosen her. And anyone who has a problem with that can answer to my claws." The blonde man’s eyes widened in pure shock. He looked at Maya as if seeing her for the first time, then quickly bowed his head in respect. "I understand, Alpha. I’ll double the guard and inform the Council. We will protect her." As the door clicked shut, Maya felt the walls closing in. "Mate? What does that mean? I’m not anyone's 'mate.' I have a life, a career, a family—" "You had a life," Kaelen interrupted, turning back to her. His eyes were no longer just gold; they were glowing with a primal light. "But the moment you saw me, and the moment I felt your soul snap into mine, that life ended. You belong to the Blackwood Pack now. You belong to me." He walked toward the door, pausing with his hand on the heavy iron handle. "Stay in this room. If you try to leave, my guards won't hurt you, but they won't be gentle. I have a war to prepare for, Maya. Try not to make it harder than it has to be." He left, the heavy thud of the lock echoing in the silent room. Maya collapsed back against the pillows, her mind racing. She was a prisoner of a monster who claimed she was his destiny. And the most terrifying part? When he had looked at her, she hadn't wanted to run. She had wanted him to stay.
