In the days that followed, Jack hovered outside my company like a restless ghost, showing up at the same time every day without fail. He never dared step closer, only stood there at a distance. He always carried expensive tonics or cupcakes from the southern city bakery I once loved. On rainy days, he stood there drenched through. On blazing days, he baked under the harsh sun. Colleagues whispered behind my back, convinced I was a heartless woman who had discarded such a devoted man. I ignored it all and kept my routine unchanged.
