Three's a crowd

Kathrine removed her pyjama shorts and stepped into her glittering floor length gown. Earlier in the day her mother's hair and makeup people had been to help her get ready. Her long blonde locks were pinned up in places whilst other pieces curled and fell down to frame her face. A heavy torque silver necklace sat round her neck with a large sapphire pendant hanging from it. Her makeup was subtle, dewy and designed to make her look young and fresh. Tonight her fathers firm were holding a charity ball. She zipped the dress up her side as her anxiety grew. Tonight, she was going to tell her father the truth. She did not intend to make the move to Partner this year. In fact, she had intentions to never make partner, but he didn't need to know that. A short time later, a an expensive black car came to collect her. She spent the long ride in silence. Once at the grand country estate, they guided her to the ballroom. Tables sat around the edges of the room and guests gathered in the middle. She looked around and found her father and mother by the stage. Her three brothers, she noted, were by the bar already. Weaving through the room, she made her way to her parents, ignoring Peter's wave as she passed. She was small, even in heels, no more than 5 foot 8. When she emerged from the crowd, she was suprised to see a tall man now stood with her parents. Kathrine scooted around the towering man to try to make her presence known. Her mother caught sight of her first. "Darling!" She exclaimed as she brought her close to kiss both cheeks. "You look stunning! I knew Marco would do a good job!" Her mother was on form tonight, she thought as her eyes rolled. Her father came next "Yes Emily, she does.. as always." he emphasised, giving Kathrine a wink. Her father put his hand on her shoulder and turned her towards the unknown man in front of them. "Kathrine, please, this is a good friend and client of the firm's, Mick." Kathrine stuck out her hand and simultaneously looked up to his face before letting out a gasp. The man in front of her was instantly recognisable as the man from the bar weeks before. The man who had passed her the bag of sanitary pads and then kissed her! In truth, she'd barely stopped thinking about that night. Being dumpy and timid, she had no experience of being swept off her feet by a man. No, Kathrine was more used to being ghosted or dumped by text. Kathrine's cheeks flushed heavily at the memory as his large hand enveloped hers. "Pleased to meet you Kathrine." his deep voice rumbled. As he shook her hand, she felt the brush of his thumb against her soft skin. She took a sharp breath in at the sensation before clearing her throat. "Pleasure to meet you too Mick." She whispered shyly as her gaze dropped to her feet. He was hard to look at. His features were so masculine and rugged yet some how he seemed to exude wealth and composure. Just as he dropped her hand and his warmth left her, a tall woman with bleached blonde hair in a high up do and a stunning floor length gown approached. As she strode towards them, a lean thigh with perfectly smooth, and perfectly bronzed skin, emerged from a high slit in her dress. The slit stopped just before her narrow hips that lead to a perfecrly toned sromach and pert small breasts. Her long slim neck met a beautiful face with high cheek bones and cat like eyes. She was stunning and fabulous, and everything her mother wanted Kathrine to be. "Mick! I was looking for you." Her high pitched feminine voice chimed. "Ah, Sam, sorry.. er yes. This is Fredrick, tonight's host and my good friend. Fredrick, this is my wife, Samantha" Mick seemed to stumble at first as he spoke "He helped us with the merger remember?" Kathrine felt her stomach flip. Wife?! What did he mean wife? "Oh yes, how lovely. And this is your beautiful wife I assume?" Said the Amazonian goddess Samantha as she gestured to my mother. "Pleased to meet you Sam." my mother gushed a little too much as she greeted her. "This is my daughter Kathrine." "Hi!" Kathrine squeeked out, before immediately feeling ridiculous next to all these beautiful confident people. "Eell, we will leave you to get to know one another Kathrine. When you make Partner this year, you will be taking over Mick's account." her father said casually as he left them, guiding his mother away with one hand. Slightly stunned, Kathrine just stood looking back at her father as he left her with these imposing strangers. Mick was easily 6 foot 4 and his wife must have been just over 6 foot in her sparkiling heeled sandals. Kathrine lightly hopped from foot to foot as she looked up at them with her mouth agape. "Don't worry dear," Samantha said softly "I'm sure you will have lots of support when you take over the account. Or maybe your father just forgot how big our retainer is for your company." her voice tinged now with a hint of sarcasm. Something flipped in Kathrine's mind and she instantly regretted all the praise she had internally lavished on this woman. "Samantha..." Kathrine's demeanour immediately shifted."I appreciate your concern, but I am more than capable of running your account, given I graduated first in my law class 5 years ago. Of course that was before working in mergers and acquisitions in my father's rival firm for 2 years." She smiled sweetly as she finished but there was a sureness and confidence in her voice. "Wow, well aren't you a suprise!" Samantha drawled back. "So.. young and so full of fire!" her eyes twinkled. "In that case, we better set up a meeting as soon as possible, we want you to get off the block fast if you are working for us." Mick cleared his throat. "I'm sure all that will come Samantha, stop trying to intimidate everyone." Kathrine's eyebrows rose at his irritated tone. She was used to the assumption she had her job due to nepotism, but she knew she was good, and although she might not enjoy living in her father's shadow, she wasn't going to be put down by some lazy heiress. "That's quite alright Mick, she just wants to be sure I am up to the job. My CV is available to you if you wish." She retorted adopting a nonchalant tone. "If I'm going to help sell you to client's I'll need to see yours too Samantha." This caused Mick to chuckle, which almost seemed strange coming from such a large man. Kathrine knew she probably had a fancy University degree in something pointless and not a lot else. Samantha actually sneered and turned on her heel to leave. Mick meanwhile took a step forwards. "I apologise for that Kathrine. I am sure you didn't deserve that. It's been a pleasure to meet you and I look forward to us..." He trailed off and reached forward. His hand rested on her shoulder as he trailed off, before bringing his face down to hers "..Working together..." he whispered as he lightly brushed her cheek by her ear with a kiss. His breath was hot on her skin and her fine hairs prickled in response. He was still holding her hand and his thumb was again stroking the soft skin as her body gave a small shudder. The blush rose again up her chest and into her face. She pressed her legs together as a bolt of electricity shot from her stomach to her core. "Likewise." She managed to say as her voice had dropped and her breath caught. His warmth left her again as he righted himself and pushed up the heavy rim of his glasses on his nose. He offered her a nod and slight smile before turning to follow his wife.
